Joining mid-season, then.

16-team top flight. 12-14 games to go. (some of the Moscow games were called off due to all the smoke earlier this month)

Zenit undefeated at the top of the league, followed by CSKA and Rubin. Sibir - 1-0 winners over PSV - 6 points adrift of safety.

Spartak were stuck in midtable after a last-minute defeat to CSKA 3 weeks ago (65,000, good atmosphere, pretty good performances by Vagner Love (his first game back from Brazil) and Doumbia (in his first game) for CSKA up front, not so excellent but not unexpected from the Spartak fans - first chucking seats at each other, then making monkey noises at Doumbia).

Round 18 kicking off today. Spartak 4 Tom' 2. Welliton bagging a 6-minute hat-trick - his 2nd in as many games. Pesyakov - following on from Soslan Dzhanaev as Spartak's latest comedy keeper - sent off giving away a penalty in the last minute.

Dynamo Moscow's Kevin Kuranyi puts a couple away at the week end as his team beat Lokomotiv 3-0. 3 in 3 league games for him now.

The key CSKA-Zenit match got moved to November, officially due to CSKA's Europa League matches against Anorthosis coming in a Thu/Tue combo. Unofficially, the probably also want to make sure that Zenit get into the CL group stages. Both teams are facing some serious fixture congestion later on in the season.

"Famously" Zenit's domestic fixture list was "unloaded" as they steamed towards the UEFA Cup victory in 2008.

Cheers for starting this thread Sash. I was always fascinated with Soviet era football but can't claim to have followed Russian football too much in recent times beyond knowing who is good, bad or indifferent at any particular time.

I'm also curious whether people here actually have a favourite Russian side? Mine would be Dynamo Moscow I suppose, simply for the reason they have had historical links with Rangers. Rangers managed the notable achievement of getting a draw against their 1945 touring side, beat them in the Final of the 1972 Cup Winners Cup and played them in a friendly in Ibrox maybe 25 years ago which I went to and was probably when I adopted them.

It has been a pretty barren quarter of a century for them all the same, just a single Russian Cup win in 1995.

i for one will be following this thread. many thanks.

can't promise starting a polish league thread cause:
1) no one would be interested
2) only interesting things that take place happen before or after the games in nearby forests - see point 1)

Sash a PM is on the way shortly.

I could never find a Russian team. I tried CSKA because of the ice hockey connection, Spartak because of their cultural role and Lokomotiv because of their name, but none of them ever clicked.

The fact that I loved both the Dynamo Kiev and Dinamo Tblissi sides of the golden age may have had something to do with it too.

I was a tad surprised to find when I moved to Liverpool that some of the older heads were still raving about that Tbilisi side as the best LFC have ever faced in Europe.

When I was little Torpedo were my 2nd side, though some Spartak fans held a grudge since 1976 as it was perceived by some that Torpedo didn't try in their final match which contributed to Spartak's relegation. But I liked their 'keepers and they had players like Shirinbekov, Savichev and the very young Tishkov. What happened to them since the mid-90s is nothing short of shameful. I think we're back to 4 incarnations at the moment. Another's appeared since FC Moscow disintegrated.

Well yes, though less to do with Dynamo Moscow and more to do with copious amounts of cheap Spanish beer. It's a good quiz question that actually, it is the only European trophy that has been presented in the changing room.

I too loved the great Tblisi side and mid 80s Kiev. A special mention to Minsk who were pretty useful in the early 80s too and had some great European wins.

Tbh I have no idea how many travelled for that from the USSR. Doubt many beyond the official delegation.

After the title in 1976, the Dynamo side from Moscow was very much the ugly sister to its siblings from Minsk, Tbilisi and Kiev.

Actually, in his "Inverting the Pyramid" Jonathan Wilson positions Malofeev's Dynamo Minsk as the anti-Kiev, which, though I could understand it, is slightly odd, given that Spartak were the anti-Kiev of the era and sustained their challenge for a much longer period.

FC Gazprom knocked out of the CL by Auxerre last night. Highlights here:
www.liveinternet.ru/users/michel_perm/post133357134/
Textbook Malafeev leading up to his sending off - his defender clearly doesn't know where he is as he hasn't bothered telling him. Despite being a 31-year-old professional goalkeeper Malafeev is notorious for being a mute on the pitch. And cr*p off his line.

Luciano Spalletti's 1st defeat as the manager of Zenit in his 24th game in charge.

More comedy goalkeeping in Russia as Rubin's Ryzhikov (who was touted as Dzhanaev's replacement at Spartak before signing new contract) lets one in from 70 meters
football.kulichki.net/ruschamp/19/5v.htm
(2nd video) costing Rubin 2 points in Nalchik.

Dzhanaev has now been sold to Terek Grozny (Chechnya).
Spartak got Terek's keeper Dikan - another one of those with Ukrainian passports but now also with a Russian one. He's 33 and played his 1st match for Ukraine in June.

Spartak travelled to Chechnya today, and with Kadyrov in the stands lost 2-0 with the 3rd keeper Belenov (standing in for the suspended Pesyakov, came from D-2 Salut this summer) looking unconvincing on both Terek goals.

Still deciding which Russian team to follow. Been observing the league more closely over the last few months and I really do love the technical nature of it. Spartak Moscow have been most entertaining over the last few weeks, for Welliton's hat-tricks in particular. Didn't see the match earlier, though. Did McGeady make an appearance?

Just chanced across this. Some nasty stuff has been happening in the lower divisions. (I know it's not the top flight, so is of limited interest, but this is the most appropriate place to mention it, I feel.)

The first of these two reports is actually on a music blog (that's why I saw it) but the second half of the entry deals with the very unpleasant trouble (and situation) :

r-a-b-m.blogspot.com/2010/08/once-again-about-politics.html

nomattimen.wordpress.com/2010/08/19/extr...ht-during-the-match/

Sounds like Karelia might be a team to support if you're at all inclined towards the left, though.

Thanks for the thread Sash08.

As you could probably guess there is a lot of interest here in Rubin Kazan, last year Gökdeniz karadeniz won the award for best foreign player in Russia but due to his role in betting scandals some years ago will probably never play for Turkey again. Guus Hiddink as boss of the national side knows all about him though.

There is this fans' football tournament in Lviv being held annually. Wisla went over this year and there was also a Poland fans' team which was basically Ostrovia (if I am not mistaken). They ended up playing each other on the pitch in the quarter-finals... and then met up in a park later on. Most of the participants were locked up.

I don't think he's even scored this season. And Tekke's hardly played after injury. Ah, I see he's moved to Besiktas for 750k EUR.
