Apparently Mazhar Majeed has pleaded guilty.

Maybe he agrees that he overstepped the mark. You know, crossed a line he shouldn't have crossed. Arf arf.

Seems that he's named a second player who he says approached him with Salman Butt.

Kamran Akmal (who I'm convinced was blameless over Sydney) is going to be in the firing line again.

Funny, if he sang like a canary, why didn't he name this mysterious second player? One distinct possibility is that he's making it up.

This goes much, much deeper than three players and a UK-based agent. I reckon Pakistan cricket could go under completely here - they've lost their ability to play at home; they could soon lose the overwhelming majority of their current playing staff.

I'm not sure the latter point is true. The team they have now is basically one purged of most of the players implicated in recent scandals (the Akmals, Wahab Riaz) and with only 3 or 4 players who've been around for awhile - Gul, Misbah, Ajmal. And they are beating Sri Lanka.

Obviously, there are huge challenges, but they are making progress. And Ijaz Butt has fucked off, which can only help them.

Hang on, they might go to jail for this? That's a bit fucking over the top isn't it?

As Barney Ronay has pointed out on twitter, the crime of Gatting et al going to South Africa is surely a much greater one

2 years and 8 months for Majeed. Butt has been given 30 months, Asif 1 year and Amir 6 months.

They were already banned.

Butt and Asif for five years, Amir for two (plus suspended sentences in each case).

The ICC has said that the convictions won't effect the bans.

I thought all three playing bans were five years. With Butt having 5+5 suspended, and Asif 5+2?

I don't want to see them playing again, though. Which means Amir, basically, as five years is effectively career-ending for the other two.

Sorry about that, you're right:

Following the investigation from the ICC's Anti-Corruption and Security Unit, which was triggered by a sting operation by the now-defunct newspaper, News of the World, the three players were all found guilty of offences under the Anti-Corruption Code and suspended from all forms of cricket for five years in Amir's case, seven in Asif's (two of which were suspended), and ten years for Butt (five suspended).

Looked a decent atmosphere in Sharjah.

Sri Lanka weren't half grinding. If he weren't Canadian, they'd probably have selected Cliff Thorburn in their middle order.

I think they are a little excessive sentences, for the offence itself, but hope they do prove a deterrent for others.
