Apparently Strauss has won the toss and opted to bat at what seems to be a very murky looking Trent Bridge. A good idea?

Well the pitch looks an absolute blinder. Could be a case of tough it out this morning and wait for the sun to come out.

I see we've got UDRS for this series. Oh my.

Mohammed Asif took 6 balls to get one over 80 mph.

Pakistan would have batted too.

Morning Tubby, morning everyone.

Everyone seems to be talking down teenage whizzkid Mohammed Aamer. Is this simply because they're scared of him, or is there an injury scare?

Morning, Bill.

Strauss nicks lovely ball from Aamer and Kamran Akmal drops a sitter.

I'm playing in Herts village cricket on Sunday and I'll be disappointed if I drop one like that.

Salman Butt has been complimented on not using a review for a close one. They'll be appointing captains for their competence in this area soon. Maybe some "Brains"-type who watches lots of cricket on TV and will stand permanently at a very straight silly mid on.

I'm available if the call comes.

Aamer by-passes the keeper and has Cook taken at slip.

Referring stuff is crap, I reckon. If you're given out you're out. I probably sound like a luddite, but it bothers me

They just had a referral where Trott was given not out after appeal.

I quite like the system though surely it has to be standard at all test matches. And I'm wary of the agenda being about Sky telling us how great their cameras are.

I know. That's why I said it then. I liked cricket in the old days when players walked if they were out, didn't complain if they were given out wrongly or if, say, a plumb LBW wasn't given. There was a certain amount of acceptance that things weren't perfect, and competitiveness didn't overwhelm everything else.

I know this is all a bit jumpers for goalposts, but I think the game's lost something

Well obviously there's always been Middlesex (and Middlesex players, and in particular that fat twat pictured), but I'm not saying the old days were perfect

But in this utopian vision there would be no need for players to complain, because if they'd been given out wrongly the opposing captain would call them back to the crease, and if a plumb LBW wasn't given the batsman would quite rightly announce "well bowled, old boy, I'm out".

You wouldn't need umpires at all, let alone question their decisions.

I think you would still need umpires for LBWs for example. I think they're better placed than batsmen to know whether a ball would have likely gone on to hit the stumps

I didn't realise that ad hoc felt that way about Middlesex. It puts his feelings about Arsenal into context, and makes me wonder whether there is a table tennis team from Hampstead that he despises.

As a relative newbie, it seems to me that one of the things that Hawkeye has done is to call into question some of the rules of thumb that umpires long used for lbw decisions. In particular, I think that the number of UDRS reviews that have shown that balls hitting above the knee roll can sometimes be hitting the stumps have made umpires much more uncertain about those calls.

If you could have heard my grandfather rail against Dennis Compton, a man who who he felt was evil incarnate (and inbrylcreem), you would understand how both Arsenal and Middlesex are two sides of the same malevolent coin.
