I think the reason that Liverpool invariably finish ahead of Everton is because they undoubtedly have had more truly match changing individuals

This is a really interesting point. If only we had a method of measuring the match changing value of various players.

liverpool might sting inter for €40m for mascherano and kuyt together. that would give roy a bit of wiggle room in the market.

That would put Mascherano at a value near that which everyone puts on Torres, wouldn't it?

I think there's a good chance Dirk Kuyt could be going to Inter too.

I have said on here several times that I think Chelsea have had the best squad in England for a number of seasons now. Of course it matters not a jot really, Manchester United won the Leagues and that's all that people will rightly care about in the future, but if I was a Chelsea fan I would think that opportunities were missed between 2006 and 2009.

Lucas has just got back into the Brazil squad. That should add a couple of million to his valuation too. Rafael from Man Utd is in as well.

no guys, tell us more about how chelsea's squad has been better than man utd's over the last four years. I'm intrigued to see your workings here.

dglh - i was suggesting liverpool might make €40m from selling mascherano and kuyt to inter. the split being 25-15 or thereabouts. benitez rates both players highly and inter are flush, especially if man city pay them €stupid for balotelli. if benitez isn't interested in kuyt, then they should make him pay more for mascherano. benitez will want to make a mega-signing having been denied the chance for so long in his previous job; liverpool can now finally make his dream come true.

who says torres is worth €40m? torres is a genius, unique, and he's worth much more than that.

judging by what man city are paying for players, they should be prepared to pay out a good £150 million for him.

Indeed I can remember man utd setting a new clean sheet record while having a run of defensive injuries that would have crippled chelsea.

uh yeah, but if you remember the actual matches, nobody took a shot against man united for three months.

perhaps the most crucial factor in the title race was chelsea getting knocked out of europe one round earlier.

no, the most crucial factor in the title race was this:

he was the reason man united won three titles even though chelsea had a better squad, let's not kid ourselves.

hmm, I think it would be much fairer to say that both sides squads declined last season, but man united were marginally less able to take the greater strain placed by those extra games.

I mean the second chelsea game took place between both legs of the bayern game, where rooney was injured, while chelsea were tucked up in bed. But the real killer was the 0-0 with blackburn after the bayern game. If they won that they would have won the league.

both teams were equally likely to drop points after european games, chelsea just had fewer of them.

Surely the fact that Man U were bloody awful following European games last season, (1.1points per game compared to 2.24 in all games) while Chelsea were only slightly worse (2.13 compared to 2.26) demonstrates that Chelsea had the better squad.

hah dalliance, man utd had to get rid of tevez and ronaldo for chelsea to finish marginally above them, yet chelsea apparently had a much better squad when man utd had both of these players.

I'm struggling to deal with this. It.... just.... doesn't..... make ...... any ...... sense.

Fair enough etienne. I didn't have time to check that. My point still remains that chelsea had a huge advantage in the title run in as a result of not having a cl quarter final, on either side of the game, that was both physically tiring, and banjaxed wayne rooney, while didier drogba was tucked up in bed. Those bayern games fucked man utd.

maybe it's an overly "heroic" analysis of what happened over the last four years, but ronaldo's achievements tower over any other player's in that time-frame. look at rooney last season: he played at the absolute peak of his ability, persuading many of the united fans that he could pick up where ronaldo left off, yet he finished the season a physical wreck, eight goals short of ronaldo's 2008 total. ronaldo made the difference in so many games that you can't look past his departure to explain why man united failed to win a fourth consecutive title.

David Ngog has scored for Liverpool. Lucas is captain. That should silence the doubters.

and what a goal it was. running towards a long ball, watching it bounce over the defender, then touching it over the keeper who'd come blundering forward, then knocking it over the unguarded line.

aquilani has got a haircut - looks like he means business this season.

erm, wayne rooney finished the season a physical wreck not because of a vainglorious attempt to compensate for ronaldo, but because he landed badly on his ankle against bayern munich, and was forced back into the team. This would have happened if ronaldo was there or not.

It is worth remembering that man utd only finished 4 points behind where they did in 2008-9, and scored 18 more goals, conceding only 4 more goals, despite having a terrible defensive injury crisis earlier in the season.

I mean man utd had so many injuries that they had darren fletcher and michael carrick at centre half. The decline of man utd last season is a little overstated to tell the god's honest truth.

But how did we get here. Ah yes, hobbes' thrashing around in rage at the suggestion that everton might have better players or something. I think that hobbes and meregreen should have a bet, and the loser should have to pay a terrible forfeit.

the point is that ronaldo did things other players can't do, including staying fit for an unfeasibly high proportion of games. it looked for a while as though rooney might equal the goal tally, but physically he wasn't up to it.

Slightly bewildered that your arguments to suggest Manchester Utd had a strong squad were Rooney being forced back from injury to early cos no other bugger in the team could score, and some injuries at the back left Ferguson forced to play midfielders there.
