I hated Gifford and Cosell, etc, but no tv crew has actually deterred me from watching a game I'd otherwise want to watch except that awful trio of Mike Patrick, Joe Theisman and Paul McGwire. Sweet Jesus they were grating, and yet they had the gig for years.

If you want to hear truly awful commentary then tonight you can savour the WA State team v Perth Glory.

You can listen live here heritagefm.net/ from 6.45pm (about 11.45am Uk time, I think).

Seconded. Theismann in particular has a voice you want to punch.

Billy Wright did England v Brazil with Hugh Johns in 1970. Of course that was England's last game at a major finals until 1980. Denis Law was alongside Coleman for Scotland's games in 1978. When did Ian St John start doing games? I think he was an ITV panelist in 1978 (as was Paddy Crerand) not a co-commentator.

Ah yes, Ian St John. I remember his contribution for ITV at the 1990 World Cup. At the start of one match, between two teams that weren't British, Brian Moore (I think) asked him what we knew about the two teams. "I have to be honest with you and say I know absolutely nothing about them," he replied.

I will take to my grave the memories of Don Howe co-piloting on Football Italia in the 90's, especially his magnificent pronunciations of Brescia's Romanian larkers Argy, Raddachewy, Loopyscew and Beledodicky.
