It is more noticeable in exteriors — the freeway shots could almost have been second-unit work from 77 Sunset Strip — but it's true across the board.

Certainly the interior of the original Mrs Draper's house is light and airy (btw, what was the deal with the rubbish repainting job?), in contrast to Don's dark apartment.

The painting bit screamed "amateur theatricals," very poor I thought.

Los Angeles is portrayed as an alsmost ethereal Promised Land for Don. It's the only place he seems relaxed because, besides Ann being there, reinventing yourself is more acceptable. In some ways he's just an ambitious mid-Westerner who chose the wrong coast.

So...how 'bout that Joan? Curvy, or what?

Trust me, she's gonna have to lose the prosthetics by next season.

Good call on the coasts AdC, and thanks for the primer on color basics, a lot of this was a bit of a grey zone for most of us.

The firm's new digs are very colorful and a bit less beige than the previous cavernous floor. A bit like Rio or Sao Paolo, New York has a large stock of mid-century modern commercial real estate and the show has made great use of it.

Heh. Nice one.

The firm's new digs are very colorful and a bit less beige than the previous cavernous floor. A bit like Rio or Sao Paolo, New York has a large stock of mid-century modern commercial real estate and the show has made great use of it.

I saw a good interview with one of their set designers about this. The furniture is much more modern in this new one - less wood, more plastic.

It's interesting they chose not to talk about the '64 election AT ALL. We missed the implosion of the Rockefeller campaign (which you'd have thought would be important given Betty), and the massive Democratic sweep (which you'd have thought would have given them all heart attacks). Not even a reference to the "Daisy" commercial. Strange.

But they're foreshadowing Vietnam like a sonofabitch. Is this realistic? This is '64, a few months before the marines went ashore at Danang. Would it have been seen as an inevitable conflict by that point?

Also, I liked in that last episode that we got a bit more of a clue into Don's background: a degree at City College! But no clue if it was before or after Korea (before seems odd b/c then why would he have "had to get away"? But equally, after seems odd b/c he would have had to have crammed a hell of a lot into the early 50s).

I really like that episode. Loved the parallels between the young blonde in California and the young blonde in New York. (Particularly the car scene.)

And Lane. Great stuff. Brilliant pay-off with which movie they picked.

Typical, I ask a question, Amor gives a wonderful answer and then I just ignore it for half a week. Sorry about that, Amor.

Amazon tells me that the book by Itten has been dispatched. I look forward to going through that. I hope you won't mind if I take advantage of your good nature and follow up with a tonne of questions after I make my way through it.

Really wish Don and Lane went to The Umbrellas of Cherbourg instead - colour galore in that one. Although in the discussion regarding what movie to see, Don did mention that he had seen everything - another reference to his movie watching.

That had been mentioned before I think. Can't remember when or why but I'm sure Roger Sterling once made some reference to Drpaer being at night school when they first found him.

I remember Roger saying that when he found him he was "selling fur coats".

Too little Roger in these episodes. Also not enough Peggy.

And especially Pete.

Pete was toxically fascinating in the first series — his character was one of the main reasons I was drawn to the show in the first place. However with each succeeding season he's become more marginal. A pity.

When's Don going to get jiggy with Rachel Bilson? This useless drunk thing is getting on my nerves. I'm not sure what the point of madmen is if they're more sad than mad.

"Trudy, do we have ice?"

That was just brilliant, in an episode filled with giggle moments. And AdC got his wish for more Pete.

The whole Peggy and Pete thing came out of nowhere. For the past couple of seasons we were conditioned to believe, as Alison did, that Peggy was in unrequited love with Don. So he is more of a father figure to her, which does explain their relationship — her growing independence from him, her constant quest for his approval.

That was Cosgrove, the other "accounts guy" that the firm had. (Campbell and Cosgrove were fighting to be lone person, up until the end of last season.)

Cosgrove was also the guy who was "published", which ticked Pete off beautifully.

This was all about Campbell's two scenes (and Allison's to a lesser degree): The reaction to being a father, and the blackmail/business of his father-in-law.

Peggy's reaction to Allison was beautifully done as well.

Yes the Pete 'n' Peggy show.

We learned early on that Pete's instincts are vicious and predatory, instantly destructive to himself and anyone he comes in contact with. He seems to have realised that too and learned to either suppress them, or control them. Whenever he's surprised now you glimpse a visceral reaction swiftly squashed by analysis. His father's death and the news of Trudy's pregnancy both elicited the "How should I think about this?" response, masking joy in the first instance and anger in the second. He's fascinating, way more interesting than Dull Draper.

So he is more of a father figure to her, which does explain their relationship — her growing independence from him, her constant quest for his approval.

I think Peggy's feelings about Don are complex and have changed as she's matured. In the past she was attracted to him, then saw him as a father figure. At present she maybe thinks of him as a kind of mentor, but residual bits of previous idealised Dons resurface from time to time. I suspect that Peggy will have to kill Don eventually, not literally of course, but professionally and personally she needs to destroy and replace him.

"Didja get any pears...Well didja?"

"We'll talk about it inside."

I saw this as possibly being equivalent to the moment in the Sopranos whe Christopher is tanked up at the gas station and ready to go on the run with Adriana...the moment when the guy realises the "downside" of kids and marriage. He's going to start putting Peggy and the kids behind him.

Maybe.

Can't agree with that.

Didn't think episode four was quite up to the quality of the first three, but that's jusdging it by high standards and I wouldn't want to push the point. Terrific acting from Moss, Kartheiser, and indeed Alexa Alemanni, but the story between Pete and hsi father-in-law didn't particularly make sense to me, and they were a bit unsubtle in hammering home some of their points.

Still enjoying it a lot though.

The problem with Don is that his character hasn't really developed since the first series, at least in comparison to the other principals.

I think its because he's mostly about back-story — who he was reveals who is — and because of that the script doesn't allow him to evolve much within the show's chronology. That will change, it will have to, but it hasn't yet.
