How many episodes will there be in the season?

My understanding was that he thought the thing with Faye was ended, so he has having a self-pity fuck. That's not as awful as the reason he thought he'd split with Faye, that she refused to violate her professional ethics for him. How does he not have eight unacknowledged kids (the term illegitimate needs to go away) and 16 kind of VD by now?

I don't know if it's noticeable in the UK, but the actors on this show are everywhere now. Jon Hamm was in The Town and something else I recently saw but forget. He's getting lots of commercial voiceover work. Good for him. Make hay while the sun shines. The guy who plays Roger Sterling played Tony Stark's dead father (in old film clips) in Iron Man 2 and Peggy shows up as Jonah Hill's girlfriend (it felt implausible) in Get Him to the Greek. There are other examples I'm missing.

There's rumours that Jared Harris is going to turn up as Moriarty in Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes sequel.

Thirteen episodes, so two more to go.

I haven't noticed them cropping up in other stuff, but then I don't have a telly and only watch stuff I already know of. My Alison Brie crush did lead me to watch an episode of some shitty sitcom called Community, but that's all I've seen.

Community isn't too bad. It has its moments, but I don't follow it any more. I forgot she was in that.

Jared Harris was good as John Lennon in that thing about Lennon and McCartney getting together in the late 1970s.

I enjoyed that Sherlock Holmes film a lot. I look forward to the sequel (insofar as I look forward to any summer blockbuster sequels, which, I'm ashamed to admit, I often do.)

I didn't have an Allison Brie crush until Yoss posted that funny or die clip. She really was adorable in that.

Community is my favorite sitcom on TV right now. The Paintball episode was one of the single greatest things ever produced.

And Troy is quickly becoming my favorite character on TV as well.

Finally caught up on the last couple of shows.

Dramatically he's kind of outlived his usefulness now, so from that point of view it wouldn't altogether surprise me if they bump him off. But I think Slattery is just too important to the show.

He's going to direct more of them isn't he? In which case Roger will very likely fade from the scene, either slowly or abruptly. I'd agree the latter as a climatic season ender is more likely. The job-seeking memorial service they attended might be a portent.

I doubt Pryce will go, they're introducing too many plot threads around him: his 'Chocolate Bunny' and abusive father for instance. He's also slowly replacing Roger as Don's drinking buddy. I'm guessing he's being set up as the company's acid casualty/drop out head-case over the next couple of seasons.

I didn't think the last episode was too bad. Not the best, but not the worst of the season either. The scenes encouraging SCDP's staff to work harder while its partners pointed fingers at each other were nice. Don's redemption is on hold, no surprise as it's hard to see where the show would go otherwise. Meanwhile Joan's clothing and body shape continue to fight a losing battle with the sixties.

But John Slatery was everwhere even before Mad Men. I remember him from Desperate Housewives and that Charlie Wilson movie, and even then I was thinking: "Ah, that guy."

Really? I don't recall seeing him before. I never watch Desperate Housewives. Who was he in Charlie Wilson's War?

Peggy was on The West Wing a few times as the President's daughter. January Jones was in a bad sequel to American Pie, and Jared Harris has been in some things, but I can't name anything any of the other regulars were in before this and I'm generally pretty good at that game.

Historically and stylistically, I'm sure you're right. But it's Joan, y'know? Just enjoy.

The only place I recognize Slattery from is a couple of episodes of Sex and the City, where he was briefly one of Carrie's flames.

According to the wife, he wanted her to piss on him.

That lad really is creepy isn't he? I suspect they're going to run away together or something.

Speaking of John Slattery (above), he directed this episode.

Nah. He's just dating Sally to get to her mother.

"I need to go learn some people's names before I fire them." - it's lines like that that makes Roger worth keeping around.

Also, how the hell does Don come up with an extra $50K on the spot? Where does his money come from, exactly? Is he saving that much money living in the village?

He got $500,000 when the old firm sold. Perhaps he still has some of that.

$50k is about $350,000 in today's money. How could Pete be expected to have that on hand?

I sort of assumed he had invested all of that half mil in the new company, but maybe he didn't need to put that much in and still has lots handy.

I don't think he would be expected to have that much on hand. But I guess that's the problem with being a junior partner who got equity for something other than money - cash calls will kill you.

Perhaps all of that will be clarified. Either way, I think the point is that Don is extremely committed to keeping the firm afloat and does not want to have to go work for somebody else.

I don't know if he paid Pete's share because he thinks the firm will need Pete to get new business, if he just feels for the guy and wants to help him preserve his marriage, of if he just thinks that the firm really needs that $50k one way or the other.

The decision to stop selling tobacco has an historical inspiration.
