I see Michael Petkovic has signed for Victory. Don't think he'll do any worse than Moss.

I don't know Petkovic although I see he's been capped 6 times.

Dutchman Rini Coolen is the new Adelaide United coach... I don't know much about him; he was in charge of Twente and Roosendaal.

Reaction of many fans to the Vidmar news: "let's hope we get a proper coach, and not a Stubbins-Mullen partnership."

Just looked up Rini Coolen on wikipedia where it says Coolen was appointed coach of Adelaide United "despite strong local support for Phil Stubbins!"

I was under the impression that Stubbins was quite popular with players and fans. He did all the right things, got his coaching licences and enjoyed some success at Adelaide and a lot of success coaching in the State leagues with Heidelberg and Whittlesea. Now the FFA continue to display their obsession with all things orange.

I doubt Stubbins will be sticking around after that.

Apparently, Michael Petkovic was last capped as recently as 2008. Completely failed to notice that.

Stubbins has never been popular with Adelaide fans, at least according to ones I have spoken to, and the ones who post on the local website. My impression of him is that of a grim, baleful figure in the background who never seems to say much, or do much for that matter. Vidmar was always the real face of the club. Some fans have blamed him for persuading Vidmar to institute the negative, non-attacking tactics that Adelaide is now famous for.

Is it just me or is there a touch of Ricky Gervais about Coolen?

I went along to watch Sydney v Everton last night. I don't know why. I'm afraid to report that I drank so much beer before, during and after the match, that my memories of the evening are limited to the following:

- Everton's pink strip.
- The fact that most of the Sydney team were listed in the programme under the name Melbourne Heart.
- Experiencing a rare moment of consumer power, upon paying $10 dollors for said programme only to discover it was only a dozen pages long and consisted mostly of pictures of Tim Cahill (we know what he looks like, he's been on every fucking advert for the last two months), and taking it back and successfully getting a refund.
- Vuvuzelas
- A companion alerting me to this Most of the second half was spent giggling at images of bollard shadows.

Yep, I was there saturday night too - cousin is an Everton fan and he flew in from Wellington for the game (the fool)

And you have summed it up pretty well there...I mean that isn't just pink it's PINK
And I persuaded him to leave his vuvuzela in the hotel

The game itself was completely forgettable - much as expected (let's be honest, a first pre-season outing, friendly, Sydney FC - it was never going to be up to much)
The fact that Dwight Yorke owned the midfield in the first half says it all really.

Huddersfield must have a pretty extensive scouting network - Hare is a Queensland state league player who has never played in the A League although he has been on Gold Coast United's youth list. Maybe it's a bit simplistic to be saying this but you'd think if he was any good an A League team would have signed him.

Meanwhile, the A League's top goalscorer, Shane Smeltz, is off to China after his world cup heroics. He scored half of GCU's goals last year so it's hard to see them coping without him. Amusingly, he described the 12 month old, billionaire plaything, supporter-free franchise as "a special club."

Is that "special" as in "In this classroom all the children are seen as being very special. They all have their own talents and skills and we love them very much"?
