Hot off tha press!

The regular season again finishes in mid-Feb, which is ludicrous, but I can't see changing as it is probably due to TV and venue clashes with the 3 other codes.

No break for Aasian cup. That will put the cat amongst the pigeons, with the likelyhood of a predominantly A-League squad.

09/10 started on a Thursday night with MVFC v CCM. The crowd was poor. So what have the FFA done? Scheduled Heart v CCM on a Thursday night to open the season. Idiots.

Things I like about the MVFC home draw:

3 games kick off at 3pm – a real football time!

Er…that's it

Things I don't like about the MVFC home draw:

4 midweek games
6 Saturday night games
5 Etihad Stadium games – 1 v Sydney, 2 v Adelaide, 1 v Heart and 1 v Gold Coast (why???!!!!)

The A League grand final is scheduled for the weekend of March 13. The AFL season normally starts on the last weekend in March but AFL 2011 will have 24 rounds not 22. The AFL haven't decided their dates for 2011 but, if the AFL grand final remains on the last Saturday in September, then there could be an enormous problem if either Melbourne team hosts the A League grand final.

Could always host it at AAMI park. Ha ha. Well, in a sensible world, anyway, not in Australian sport.

Double-header in Sydney is an interesting idea. By interesting, I mean "mostly bad", but I might try and get along.

The huge number of midweek matches are a problem too. It's not something that Australians get into, apart from State of Origin in NSQ/Qld. Hounded out of reasonable season start and end dates by other codes, we now move midweek to be able to continue to accomodate them.

Basically, the schedule is a flop, a work around for other sports.

2 more big signings for Melbourne Heart - Josip Skoko and Michael Beauchamp. They'll be starting the season as favourites with the squad they're building.

That's what they said about Gold Coast at the start of last season!

We've got another home game at Adelaide Oval next season.. don't know what to say about that, except that Adelaide Oval is a terrible venue for football.

True - but don't forget Gold Coast were top with just 2 games left. Perhaps if they'd had a decent coach they might have won it.

Melbourne Heart's coach is Dutch so he must be good.

Melbourne Heart have signed a 4th 34 years or over player - 36 year old Gerald Sibon who apparently scored 43 goals for Sheffield Wednesday when they were in the EPL.

Is that as a marquee, MA? I'm assuming it isn't. A quick trawl through otf gold reveals little other than his time at Wednesday being considered a waste of money on an uninterested player. Bodes well for the Heart.

I believe Skoko is a marquee player which means they can still sign another and he doesn't have to be Australian. It'll be interesting to see how many clubs go for 2 marquee players - Victory, Heart, Sydney, Perth and Gold Coast are the only ones I can see doing it.

Victory to have a friendly against Boca Juniors at Docklands on July 16. And I thought the best squad they could get to play this year was the Come Play XI.

Victory-Boca Juniors is just 2 days after Heart-Everton. The Victory tickets are a fair bit cheaper (but still too expensive at $40 to $89 compared to Heart's $50 to $140) but I suppose the EPL obsessed locals will see Everton as far more attractive opposition. Great shame they're playing it at Etihad Stadium.

Another one for the poster boys. MV are Really trading on the Boca name there, asking for $40+ a pop, in a 50,000 seater stadium, for a club which I notice has just finished 16th (out of 20) in Argentina's Clausura.

Even a crap Boca Juniors though, still conjures up lots of enticing imagery, but a lot of it is to do with the Bombonera and the mental fans there, and none of which will be remotely close to the experience one's $99 will get at Etihad.

These are the scraps we have to feed on in this country. Disinterested and overpriced touring clubs or national teams in off-season mode with nothing at stake, leading to a total absence of the urgency, tension or atmosphere which we fans associate with games we watch on telly with these big names. Yet we still go, because we're gagging to say we've seen Riquelme or whoever. Occasionally it's worth it - Wesley Sneijder at the SFS last November was a joy to watch even if the game finished 0-0.

Melbourne Heart have also signed left-back Dean Heffernan, who didn't really impress with us (although he had his moments).

Poor lad only pitched up in Huddersfield to try and get in the World Cup squad.

Forty years ago or so, big-name overseas touring clubs were the lifeblood of the game in Australia, the highlight of any season.

Surely this should no longer be the case.... yet fans still seem prepared to pay through the nose to see them. Thank god none are ever likely to come to Adelaide.....

Heff was always low down in the LB pecking order.
He was keeping himself fit in the hope that some Duchess of Stranraer-like scenario, as outlined by Alan Partridge, would see him elevated to the throne.

Unfortunately for him, Chipperfield and Carey returned from their injuries.

I hope you get a better Boca than the disinterested bunch in Seattle tonight.

Carlos Hernandez scored against France tonight, 25 yard bomb into the side netting.

The Heffernan news is timely. Last night he was on an SBS world cup promo during which he declared how he spent most of his time in Leeds because Huddersfield was rather dull. He also mentioned the lack of good surfing the area.

He is from the Eastern States so his lack of appreciation of geography is understandable.
