When did cat food suddenly become "Gourmet Selection" or "Tender Terrine"? I mean, what the fuck is this?

People food for cats, for fucks sake.
When I had cats in my younger days they were all fed on some unidentifiable mush called Katkins that made doner meat look like fillet steak, there certainly weren't any moist steaklets.
Today Jingle cat had some of these:

Trout in jelly with spinach. When did cats ever like spinach? Not even Popeye's cat would have eaten spinach.
The thing is, we buy these delicious morsels as a treat for him, but after a couple of mouthfuls he looks up an says (In his posh voice, which is similar to Stewie Griffin, but a bit deeper. It's rather how I expect Raffles The Gentleman Thief would have sounded. I'm afraid my cat has delusions of grandeur, he was born and brought up on a Midlands council estate.) "These are quite tasty actually, you know in future, I'll be having these, and you can shove that tinned rubbish. Now pour the milk will you, I need something to wash this down with." And that'll be it. The next time you try and fob him off with some supermarket's own brand meat he'll turn his nose up and then proceed to pester you until you open a Sheba Prime Cut Cat Food Dome.
This never happens with dogs does it? They'll eat absolutely anything, even another dog's shit.

What exactly is 'Jingle cat'? Is that by any chance your cat's name?

yes it is. We tend to be pretty literal in how we name animals, and when we first took him in off the street he had a bell collar which made a jingling noise as he trotted down the path.
He tends to bring waifs and strays back with him into the garden, these have been named Grey cat,Black cat, Fluffy Black cat, Black and White cat, Mostly White cat and Scraggy cat.
It does seem to highlight a lack of imagination when giving them names.

I know what you mean but cats are smarter than most advertisers, and retain their own versions of brand loyalty. For example one of our cats has the palette of a fourteen-year-old and point blank refuses to eat anything that doesn't come out of a packet or box. Fresh tuna? forget it. Steak? not a chance. He wants cereal dammit!

One of my cats is on this, the little fattie that she is:

The other one is on:

Neither of them like wet food - gourmet or not. They like the occasional prawn or piece of chicken though.

What happens when you feed the cat the cheap stuff? I mean, once it hasn't eaten for a few days, what happens then?

Our cats have stopped eating Felix, they just don't like it. But we persevered because we'd been given a 12 pack of tins, after a couple of days of trying to beat them in the waiting game, we got birds and mice being brought in repeatedly, I think about 4 in 5 days.

We got them Whiskers again after that.

There's a simons cat sketch in there somewhere.

They should eat birds and mice, that would be better, surely?

I agree. What I don't like is dead birds and mice left in the kitchen and dining room floor to tread on when you stumble barefoot to the toilet at 3am.

or your daughter finding them and going 'look daddy a yucky old mouse'. Actually I find that a bit amusing that she's so chilled out about it, I was worried she'd be weirded out by death, I guess that comes as she gets older and learns it from others.

If hobbes doesn't eat his food it gets put out for the foxes, as a result there are apparently always foxes asleep in the garden now. I went round there the other day and there was indeed a fox asleep on the compost bin. and there had been a couple on the lawn earlier. Hobbes does not like them, but he only has himself to blame for being fussy.

I have been trying to switch my cat to a healthier food, but he won't eat it. He only likes Fancy Feast - the McDonald's of cat food.

Ah, nice...we haven't had a cat thread in a while.

Pablo mostly gets dry food--Science Diet indoor cat formula. We'll give him a can every once in a while, also SciDi food. One of our friends feeds her cats Weruva cat food, which is the epitome of this thread title. It's completely ridiculous--each can is about $3.50. They have a flavor called Marabella Paella, which has mackerel, calamari, shrimp, and mussels in it.

The pet store I buy our cat food at has a frozen case near the registers for something called Yoghund--frozen yogurt for dogs.

Ah, I see - the mistake you're making is letting an animal into your house.

believe it or not, cats will pretty much eat anything. I seem to remember that they like broad beans, (I didn't like them, the cat did. it worked out well)

They only get notions if they have options. Cat food is an incredible scam. what the cat wants to eat are the entrails of it's still warm prey, not confit of duck with baby potatoes. they'll perfectly happily eat a bowl of stale bread soaked in water.

They will. Hobbes prefers quorn to meat, also he loves sweetcorn, peas, mushrooms, kidney beans, any kind of tomato sauce, as well as the obvious yogurt type things. and I've seen him steal salad off plates more than once. I miss him so badly.

True TonTon!

It's a tough call on the least pleasant -

Dead Animal parts left by the cats
Faeces left by the dog
Peppa Pig toys with sharp edges left by daughter

Some people don't like Big Red Club threads on here, others can't abide threads about the Catholic church, but I've always found cat threads to be the absolute low point of OTF.

What is it about cats that makes people so bloody soppy about them? There's no point in moaning about having to pay through the nose for gourmet cat food only for Mr. Tiddles to turn his nose up at it. Either let them eat what they really want - blackbirds and robins and blue tits (which are all an excellent source of taurine) - or don't keep a cat.

And dog people can fuck off as well.
