Oh, and I forgot to add a big-up for the Fat Cat in Norwich, my League One away pub of the season (contributed to my recollections of our subsequent 0-4 drubbing being mercifully hazy). The one in Colchester's very friendly too.
Is it part of a chain, then? Is it even perhaps thus linked to the Fat Cat in Sheffield that is associated with The Kelham Island Brewery?

Wrongness of epic proportions.

Whereas the Circus might well be something of an acquired taste, the Monkey is dreadful.

Far better to try the Grey Horse instead.

Grey Horse? Is that the one just along from The Circus as you're walking towards Picadilly? Only been the once but it was pretty good. Carpets could've done with a wash though.

Yep. That's the one.

The Circus has probably become a bit too popular, the Grey Horse next door is equaly small but much more relaxed. The Old Monkey is a Holt pub, it's cheap as chips but that's about it.

Other notable places I enjoy are the Castle Hotel on Oldham Street although sadly the drain pipe going into the urinal is no more. Quirky place to say the least...The Peverily of the Peak is a similar kind of place. More modern, Cask is a great little bar serving excellent foreign beers and local ales.

Otherwise, I've just sampled all the pubs in Glenridding by Ullswater, well, Helwellyn Gold is a gorgeous beer but they know how to charge 'round the pubs there, 3£ for a pint of local ale is a tad pricey...
