Clearly, this is a side issue, and the thread should be entitled DAVID BECKHAM IS IN FINLAND!!!!!!!!!11

That's the dignified tone most of the Finnish media is going with since it was revealed he will be operated on by Sakari Orava in Turku. CTT would love it here.

"11"? Does that mean that the news of Beckham will be on at 11?

I don't know if you're joking or not, BoE, but you can follow on their live blog, or YLE Turku's Facebook page.

This is the kind of stuff I pay my licence fee for.

I'm probably in the minority of one here, but even if he isn't fit, I hope he can travel with the squad just in a motivational/babysitter role. He's been a great example of how lots of money and fame shouldn't distract you from the fact that you have the greatest job in the world which almost everybody would be willing to do for free. I doubted whether he had much left to give on the pitch in this World Cup, but he sets an admirable level of professionalism whilst sitting on the sidelines and I can't see why that shouldn't continue.

That's presuming he'd be willing to give up his summer to basically hang around doing nothing, but I get the impression he would.

On the "disgrace" of putting the Beckham story on the front page, is this at all surprising or some fresh upset? Does the UK news media not regularly do infotainment? Beckham is like the biggest star in the UK, right? When Tiger Woods' private life blew up I didn't relish the idea that it would be front page news alongside earthquakes and suicide bombings or whatever, but angrily expecting it not to be would have seemed...Nietzschean somehow.

This is very good news for England, surely?

A squad place won't be wasted on a player whose value to the team is questionable at best and the circus that follows him won't be baggage to the rest of the squad (not that they aren't prone to creating their own distractions).

Hahaha! Give it another chance SP. Look, they've got rid of the default brown colour scheme for the new version.

Edit: and it looks like Nick Clegg is showing the world how he is going to use his special 'healing hands' to get David fit for the WC.

Yes - this. Except I'd like to see him in more of a 'specialist coaching' role - i.e. right-side midfielders, just to help them perfect their crossing. At least, that would be the official line. Such a position would have to be completely 'manufactured', but his all-round experience would be of substantial benefit to the team.

Just a few years ago I would never have thought that David Beckham could motivate anyone, but this might just be one time he can.

Indeed. That Clegg chap just has empty promises and rhetoric. Beckham's injury is all real. Can't see how the Lib Dems ousted him.

This is the man who showed such vast levels of self-regard that he called a press conference on the morning after his country was knocked out of the World Cup to announce (tearfully yet immaculately turned out) that he was resigning as captain (which it isn't his place to decide upon) in order to deflect from the fact that he was likely to be dropped completely anyway?

Yeah, you'd want him around wouldn't you?

On the plus side, England are steadily eliminating the players who can be expected to miss a penalty when the inevitable shoot-out arrives.

hanging around all summer, being interviewed by the media, not having to explain away exactly why he was playing so badly, saying positive things and everyone saying what a shame it was that he wasn't playing, when he could be home having a nice quiet time with wife and children....

Now why would he do a thing like that?

Still though I feel quite sorry for him. but it's not as though he's actually done anything other than flop horribly at international tournaments, even when he was really good.

I dunno, I just took that as being a way of saying, "I know, I played sh1t in this tournament, I want everyone to know I'm not fooling myself into thinking this can continue and the team needs to move on."

In another thread about Rui Costa, I argued that although he didn't feature much in Euro 2004, behind the scenes he was vital. Beckham would've been England's Rui Costa, one of the most high-profile players in the squad happy just to be there and do what he can. The fact there will be a media circus around him and not the first XI can only help the prospects of the team.

Didn't Rui Costa score against England in Euro 2004?
Anyone who thinks there will be any less of a media circus with Beckham out of the squad is, I think, going to be unpleasantly surprised.

Our biggest sporting event, the Super Bowl, couldn't be prouder of its media circus cred. It's the fucking World Cup, it's all about the circus.

Quite, except I'm not actually English. I presume you've met the English media? Generally, the less of them, the better.
