I absolutely hate records that are prefixed or suffixed with the thread title but for some reason, I have found out the following stats from this period so I thought I share the waste of 15 minutes with you.
Only 9 teams in the current Premiership were there in 1992/93
There are 22 teams outside the EPL that have been in it in this period
Norwich
Qpr
Sheff Weds
Sheff UTd
Coventry
Ipswich
Leeds
Southampton
Oldham
Palace
Boro
Forest
Newcastle
Swindon
Leicester
Derby
Charlton
Watford
Bradford
West Brom
Reading
Wimbledon

They're certainly still suffering now, but the situation they are in now is a result of ridiculous overspending in an effort to cling on to the big boys coat tails. Throwing money at players like Collymore and Carbone was only ever going to end in tears.

My point exactly. The fact that Bradford are still struggling almost a decade later bodes not well for Portsmouth, who I would like to charitably describe as Bradford on crack.

Is that normal for the top flight? Lets take the same time period for the previous 17 seasons.
Teams from the First Division 1974-1975 (22 teams) that were there in 1991-92 - only twelve
Liverpool
Everton
Sheff Utd
Man City
Leeds
QPR
West Ham
Coventry
Arsenal
Tottenham
Luton
Chelsea
There were also 22 teams outside the top flight that had been in it in that period:
Derby
Ipswich
Stoke
Middlesbrough
Burnley
Wolves
Newcastle
Birmingham
Leicester
Carlisle
Sunderland
Bristol City
West Brom
Bolton
Brighton
Stoke
Swansea
Watford
Oxford
Charlton
Portsmouth
Millwall
And Carlisle were in the top flight in 1974-75 and bottom of the league in 1991-1992

I worked out I'd seen 5 of the current Premiership teams in either the third or fourth tier in the 90s, which quite surprised me, as my assumption was that upward mobility had stalled.

I think that too, I still sometimes have to do a double-take when I see Wigan and Hull's names in the Premier League.
There was quite a spate of the "third to first" phenomenon when I was a kid, though, it seemed - Bristol City, Swansea City, Oxford United, Wimbledon. Tranmere Rovers all but made it too.
Nottingham Forest might do it this year, but they're hardly a "small club" in the same way.

It wasn't Wimbledon's place in the top flight that did for them though. They were the polar opposite of Bradford, not paying inflated wages or outlandish transfer fees, but finding, developing and selling on players such as Warren Barton and John Scales.
The £7.5m they paid for John Hartson may have been a turning point, but their eventual demise had nothing to do with football reasons whatsoever, and it took the ridiculous decision to franchise the club by the FA to finally get the club back in their own borough, sadly this had to come at the expense of their league status.

No, Plough Lane was sold to new developers weeks before the decision was made, but had been available all the time. It's like the owners hadn't even bothered to look in Merton.

I like the table in the opening post as it puts us in third place, oh for those dizzy heights again, any league will do.
“Throwing money at players like Collymore and Carbone was only ever going to end in tears” - and it did. Excellent player was Benito but he never was able to shake off the mercenary tag. I recall a rumour circulating that he arranged to be substituted part way through one match so he could get to the airport in time for a flight, it wouldn’t surprise me if it were true.
Can’t imagine Mr Irvine standing for it mind, then again I can't imagine players of Benito's quality gracing S6 for some time yet.
