I guess he is differentiating between Ratzinger naked before the world and when he has his pope hat on. I'm not sure that being the pope is the sort of thing that allows you to be yourself ever again though.

I could be wrong, this could be similar to the whole when is the pope infallible and when is he just a man in a triple tiara?

Sounds more like Küng putting in the knife. I can see no evidence that Ratzinger "engineered" the cover-ups. Seems like he didn't need to if he wanted cover ups.


but that comes from kung having what appears to be a very different reading of that 2001 letter to your one g-man.

There is no denying the fact that the worldwide system of covering up cases of sexual crimes committed by clerics was engineered by the Roman Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith under Cardinal Ratzinger (1981-2005). During the reign of Pope John Paul II, that congregation had already taken charge of all such cases under oath of strictest silence. Ratzinger himself, on May 18th, 2001, sent a solemn document to all the bishops dealing with severe crimes ( “epistula de delictis gravioribus” ), in which cases of abuse were sealed under the “secretum pontificium” , the violation of which could entail grave ecclesiastical penalties.

I was banned from his old blog, incidentally. OTFers will be shocked to hear it was for being "snide". In my defence, I was being snide towards Frank Beckwith. Fuckwith had claimed he was refused tenure owing to his religious beliefs; I offered my professional opinon as a philosopher familiar with his writings that there were much more plausible reasons academics refused to take him seriously.

But I digress. If DCH isn't just covering his arse (and it'll be tough to prove otherwise), that's fairly massive news. I take it we can put a stop to all this "John Paul The Great" nonsense now? It should also prompt a rather swift application of the brakes on his "fast-tracked" beatification...

Ha, nicely put. Yeah, Wichser formed partt of the reactionary trinity, with the horrible Meuissner in Cologne and Müller of Regensburg. I have a feeling that the German bishops' conference was waiting to break that club. Its president, Zollitsch of Freiburg, isn't quite as good as his predecessor, Lehmann of Mainz, but I rather like him.

Interesting though that Mixa is going because he slapped pupils and stole funds, not because of sexual abuse.

Meanwhile, it took protests from abuse survivors to persuade the orgasnisers of a Mass in Washinhton to reralise that Dario Castrillon Hoyos was not a suitable celebrant. Jesus wept.
