Sorry if there is already a CL thread for 2010, but I couldn't find one.

Loving a CD i found in Osaka by Kagero. It's a jazz quartet (drums, bass, sax, piano) who have a fantastic punk energy. Whats great about them is taht they actually have catchy tunes as well, not just a load of noodling. Their on Myspace if you fancy a listen. If anyone likes them I could upload the CD or something.

www.myspace.com/kagerojp

Also enjoying Hi-Fi Antomia, who are like a chilled out Pizzicato Five. Also like the XX and a John Martyn comp I finally got around to buying.

Ugh! 1985 synths!

Weirdly enough, I was playing a Van Halen track earlier this evening, but it was this one (from 1981) and which has far better synths, IMO.

It's crazy, "I won't kneel" and now "Paper Romance", two of the best singles I've heard in a long time. If the new album only consists of field recordings of squirrels eating nuts *plus* these two songs, it'll still probably be the best album of the year.

I usually give Groove Armada a wiiiiiiiiiiide berth, but they seem to have found some fine form.

I was thinking of giving Black Light pride of place at the top of a 'uncharacteristically good albums suddenly made by bands that have been mediocre for ages' thread. Haven't listened properly right the way through but what I've heard so far has been an unexpected pleaure.

The cover is ace too.

I think I may be finally going all World music, I'm listening to Nigeria 70 - Lagos Jump, a comp of Afro-funk, Highlife & Heavyweight Afrobeat, apparently, genres about which I know nothing except that this LP is making me wish I knew more.

I've also had the "Life on Earth" soundtrack on my shuffle, not least due to the inspiration of Taylor's review on the Quietus. And on that Trunk Records tip, I picked up that Dirty Fan Male after reading about it in the Archive. Funny as hell, if a little bit X-Factor auditions in parts.

And what with my Teutopop jag at the minute I'm also playing the soundtrack to "Chariots of the Gods?" by the Peter Thomas Sound Orchester.

All these are due to come off my shuffle today - at least one of the things that needs to replace them is the Schubert from another thread.

I'm working my way through a 100-CD Modern Jazz boxed set bought dirt cheap from a German amazon seller - just over 50 quid, including postage to the US. The sound quality is superb, and most of the CDs are the exact individual albums released in the 50s, sometimes two on one disc, or lots of extra tracks. The only thing missing is the artwork, but you can't complain at this price. All the major stuff's on there - Miles, Coltrane, Rollins, Baker etc., plus a load of stuff I've never heard.

That aside, a revival for Mozart's mercurial Requiem, ahead of a concert later this month, and the new albums by Midlake and Laura Veirs.

Ah, excellent. I highly recommend the first Nigeria 70 compilation also. It was out of print for a while, but I think it's now back in circulation thanks to the increasing popularity of African music compilations.

I can recommend some other stuff as well, if you'd like.

Last week I was re-acquainted with my vinyl collection that has lane dormant in my brother's loft since I left the UK in 1987. So I've been going through old albums that I had forgotten existed, and a load of naff 12" singles sent me by record companies back in my D-J ing days.

One real delight I'd forgotten about was Sugar Billy's album 'Super Duper Love'. I brought the album when I found it at The Diskery on import, largely because it had one of the naughtiest album covers ever made, a style copied directly from The Ohio Players' Pain, Pleasure, and 'Ecstasy' albums on Westbound. But when I got it home the album was more than decent.

The title track was covered catastrophically by Joss Stone a few years back, but don't let that put you off, actually it's a great tune. I'll post the mp3 here later if anyone is interested.

Sadly, I can't find the cover 'art' on Google, but I'll keep looking.

[Edit: Here you go...]

There were two covers for each release, it seems. These were the originals, as far as I can tell:
