Behold "Young Turks" by Rod Stewart.

I'm going through one of my intermittent phases of listening to loads of cocainey, white-suited, keyboard-driven 80s Success Rock (see also: Robert Palmer, Steve Winwood, Nick Straker Band).

Very random Kids From Fame dancers invading the 'runaway lovers' narrative in the video...

Feel free to post your own favourites in that vein (nostril?), if you have any.

"This video contains content from WMG, who has blocked it in your country on copyright grounds."

Dang.

For reasons I can't quite define, I'm going through a 'didn't like it then, but like it now' phase which includes (remarkably) Toto's Africa and Rosanna; Robert Plant's Burning Down One Side and In The Mood; and a few others I'm too embarrassed to mention.

The Honeydrippers "Sea of Love" video is another masterpiece of the genre, with Robert Plant singing to the accompaniment of a lethargic, Speedo-clad xylophonist.

Would Roxy Music's Avalon fit into this category, or is it too somber? (Or too good?)

Whatever floats your yacht, really. I prefer my cocaine music a bit more uptempo and uplifting.

Steve Winwood - "While You See A Chance Take It"

Robert Palmer - "Some Guys Have All The Luck"

Nick Straker Band - "A Walk In The Park"

Not quite in the same vein but along similar lines (white ones... ho, ho), but does anyone recall a particularly deplorable Whitesnake video from the late 80's that featured a frighteningly-maned Dave Coverdale cavorting about with a similarly-coiffeured seductress in what one presumes was supposed to be a snapshot of an almost unbearably passionate affair?

It was a power ballad (natch), lots of thwacking snare drums, clanging guitars. Can't think of the name of the song at all. Ring any bells?

The only Whitesnake video I remember involved David Coverdale's girlfriend writhing around on the hood of a car. "Here I Go Again" was the name of the song, I believe.

Phil Collins/Genesis "Invisible Touch" and "Sussudio" and Starship's "We Built this City" might fit in the "Success Rock" category, too.

There's also Heaven 17's Penthouse and Pavement, but it was meant as a send-up of yuppie culture. The album cover is perfect, though, for this thread:

Back to theme - Don Henley's Boys Of Summer, while ostensibly white-suit-free, is pretty aurally synonymous with Cocaine Rock, in my opinion. Dead-eyed, drum machine back beat? Check. Looming Yamaha synth? Check. "Feelin' it, maaaaan" vocals? Check. Guilty pleasure? Definitely. It's fucking fantastic.

Glenn Frey's The Heat Is On, on the other hand, possesses all the elements of the above (synth apart, maybe) but is utterly abominable.

The music journos on here would be best placed to confirm this but I'm willing to bet that if you follow the solo careers of The Eagles throughout the 80's you'll find an awful lot of Success Rock.

You people's ignorance of the work of Whitesnake and Mrs David Coverdale, aka Tawny Kitaen,,repulses me.

Doesn't really belong in this thread though.

Hang on, you can see (what I can only describe as) one of Tawny's boobs at 2.19 of that vid? have I stumbled across an unedited version or was this always there?

How did my 16 year old Kerrang-reading self miss this? Too busy with nonsense about Slayer & Public Enemy no doubt.

Glenn Frey! (Again, as he's mentioned above, of course.)

I would also think "The Power of Love," by Huey Lewis and the News might fit the bill.

And "Simply the Best," by Tina Turner.

You know, I had hoped that perusing the Whitesnake videos available on YouTube would quickly tell me what Whitesnake video I saw all those years ago. But after watching a few of them it could have been any of them, really.

He's been mentioned upthread already but the Robert Palmer/Duran Duran supergroup The Power Station surely deserves a mention
