This year (2004) it will be 40 YEARS since the BROWNS' last championship (1964), how sweet (and unlikely) it would be if 40 years on they could win another!

One of the most breathtaking games in playoff history saw former beertruck driver MICHAEL LEWIS win it for the BROWNS on his 96 yard kickoff return with 2 seconds left in the game, "The Kickoff Return" instantly entering CLEVELAND BROWNS lore.
The game itself was an extraordinary ding-dong affair, with two TY LAW interceptions for TDs of TIM COUCH appearing to doom the BROWNS. Down 37-24, things looked bleak for the BROWNS, despite the fact that had kept TOM BRADY in check all game.
One quick drive for a TD made it 31-37 and then after a successful onside kick the BROWNS extraordinarily took the lead 38-37.
With a minute left in the game the stage was set for TOM BRADY to mount another one of his fourth quarter heroics and drive the PATS down the field for the winning score.
And that's what transpired as BRADY converted a 4th down and expertly steered the PATS into FG range. VINATIERI nailed a 30 yarder to apparently win it 40-38.
But NEW ENGLAND had foolishly left 2 seconds on the clock and still had to kick the ball off again. The BROWNS offense would have no time left for a Hail Mary - the kickoff return had to be a score.
The former beertruck driving speedster MICHAEL LEWIS went racing up the middle of the field, broke into daylight, and suddenly, miraculously, beautifully, was gone, streaking 96 yards to paydirt and sending BROWNS fans everywhere into joyful delirium.
In truth the BROWNS deserved to win this game, having outgained the PATS 408 yards to 260.
TIM COUCH completed 25 of 47 for 395 yards, 4 TDs and those 2 exceptionally costly INTs.
BILLY MILLER was the leading receiver with 8 catches for 116 yards. ANDRE DAVIS had 3 TDs on his 4 catches for 86 yards, and QUINCY MORGAN added 4 catches for 94 yards.
TOM BRADY finished 12 of 22 fo 171 yards and a score. He was knocked briefly out of the game and ROHAN DAVEY came on to complete 7 of 8 for 71 yards.
ANTOWAIN SMITH went nowhere with 12 carries for 19 yards.
GERARD WARREN got a sack for the BROWNS D.
TY LAW actually finished MVP for the game for his 2 TDs on 2 INTs.
And the BROWNS NATION will be heading down from icy OHIO to sunny FLORIDA to watch their heroes as excitement mounts about the BROWNS' unlikely playoff run. It is 40 years since the last CLEVELAND BROWNS championship...
The DOLPHINS boast a ferocious D featuring probably the finest CB duo in the league, SAM MADISON and PATRICK SURTAIN, and the extraordinary running talents of RICKY WILLIAMS...

A glorious demolition of the AFC's #1 seed in the brilliant Florida sunshine by the surprising and suddenly potent BROWNS.
A rampant BROWNS D intercepted JAY FIELDER FIVE TIMES - by TERRY FAIR (twice), SAMARI ROLLE, RANDALL GODFREY and ROBERT GRIFFITH - and held him to a feeble 7 completions on 34 attempts for 74 yards.
Meanwhile TIM COUCH completed 26 of 42 yards and 287 yards, 3 TDs and one INT (returned for a score by JASON TAYLOR for the only points the FINS would score).
ANDRE DAVIS had another great game with 7 catches for 99 yards and a score, and WILLIAM GREEN pounded 11 times for 50 yards and 2 TDs.
The BROWNS D held the beast that is RICKY WILLIAMS in check, with him carrying 14 times for only 48 yards.
The FINS punted 6 times while the BROWNS only punted once.

One breathtaking miracle in a playoff series is one thing. Two suggests that the fates are smiling upon the CLEVELAND BROWNS 40 years after their last NFL Championship.
Just like against the PATS, there were 2 seconds left on the clock. This time the BROWNS were 60 yards from paydirt, and trailed the JAGAURS 35-34.
Rather than fling a HAIL MARY into the end-zone, COUCH dropped back and hit NORTHCUTT on a quick slant, splitting the seam between the corner and safety. NORTHCUTT went zipping through the gap between the two defenders and was off to the races, triumphantly speeding 60 yards for the winning score.
The miraculous winning score concluded a long and extremely arduous battle against the JAGUARS and astonishingly sent the CLEVELAND BROWNS to their second straight SUPER BOWL appearance.
TIM COUCH was the MVP for his 19 of 32 for 377 yards, 2 TDs and 2 INTs performance.
ANDRE DAVIS, with 4 catches for 99 yards, and BILLY MILLER, with 4 grabs for 88 yards, were his main beneficiaries. WILLIAM GREEN had 12 carries for 61 yards and a score.
The BROWNS were up 31-14 and cruising when #1 CB SAMARI ROLLE got hurt and was out for the game. Suddenly the JAGS passing attack came alive, with lowly reserves DAYLON McCUTCHEON and ANTHONY HENRY struggling to stem the tide. The BROWNS collapsed from 31-14 to 34-35, setting the stage for the miraculous reception by NORTHCUTT.
TERRY FAIR was a bright spot in the secondary, with 7 tackles, 1 for a loss, and an INT return for a TD (his second straight). GERARD WARREN had a couple of sacks.
BYRON LEFTWICH completed 25 of 42 for 337 yards, 3 TDs and an INT. FRED TAYLOR pounded 13 times for 39 yards and 2 TDs.
The BROWNS enjoyed one huge stroke of luck when DONOVAN DARIUS intercepted COUCH only to fumble it away on the return. The JAGS also missed a chipshot FG.
So 40 years on after the last NFL Championship, the Kardiac Kids are back in the SUPER BOWL, where they will face the mighty 14-2 NY GIANTS.
VEGAS is already making NEW YORK's finest 10 points favourites! This Big Blue team boasts KERRY COLLINS, TIKI BARBER, AMANI TOOMER, JEREMY SHOCKEY, MICHAEL STRAHAN, WILL ALLEN, and a bunch of other brilliant performers.
The BROWNS will surely need a superlative performance to have a chance of beating them.
This will be the final chance for glory for JAMES WILLIAMS, JURAN BOLDEN and MICHAEL LEWIS, who are retiring after the game. WALLY WILLIAMS and RANDALL GODFREY are also in their final year with the team.

On the first series of the game, with the GIANTS beginning their first possession, BROWNS DE COURTNEY BROWN swooped in unblocked on KERRY COLLINS and blasted the star QB, knocking him out of the game. It was a brutal, devastating, game-changing hit, a hit that told the world how much the BROWNS wanted this game.
On came GIANTS back-up TRENT DILFER, and although he would go on to throw for a lot of yards, he would never pose the same kind of threat as COLLINS.
It was an incredibly hard-hitting game with both teams laying it all on the line. The BROWNS lost OLB CHAUN THOMPSON (replaced by SEAN WEATHERSPOON) and CB TERRY FAIR (replaced by ANTHONY HENRY) during the game, while the GIANTS would lose CB WILL ALLEN.
During an incredible spell of emotion and passion the BROWNS surged to a 42-14 lead by the beginning of the fourth quarter and this game looked all but over.
At the two minute warning the GIANTS had made it to 42-28 (courtesy of an onside kick), but the BROWNS were driving in the NY red-zone for the winning score. At that point, they should have been just pounding it, but TIM COUCH threw into the end-zone and was intercepted.
It was to prove an incredibly costly error as NY went straight back down the field to score, recovered an onside kick, then scored again to tie it at 42-42.
At that point supporters of both teams across America were in state of nervous exhaustion and it would have been understandable had the GIANTS made another error.
But it was almost as though they took a collective gut-check and said "let's go finish this thing!"
Down the field they went on a swift drive capped by GREEN's 1 yard TD plunge to make it 49-42.
And then with only seconds remaining a fired-up BROWNS D forced four straight incompletions to turn the ball over on downs.
As TIM COUCH knelt to deliver the victory the roar of triumph and of redemption from OHIO was heard all across America.
COUCH would finish 20-30 for 344 yards, 3 TDs and that INT.
WILLIAM GREEN ran 7 times for 40 yards but 3 TDs. The BROWNS offensive line out-muscled the much-vaunted GIANTS defensive front featuring brilliant players like MICHAEL STRAHAN every time he went in for a score.
QUINCY MORGAN won the MVP and is going to Disneyland, with 7 catches for 156 yards and 2 TDs.
ANDRE DAVIS had another good game with 4 catches for 97 yards and a score.
TERRY FAIR got his third consecutive INT for a TD before being knocked out of the game.
TRENT DILFER finished 26 of 40 for 401 yards, 4 TD and 2 INTs.
TIKI BARBER carried 18 times for only 42 yards, and a score.
'BIG CAT' WILLIAMS gave two years of faithful service after being signed as a FA at the beginning of the dynasty. BOLDEN was only a reserve, but MICHAEL LEWIS will be remembered forever for the miracle return against the PATRIOTS.
