liq, injury and putting back on the weight made duff slow, but mourinho taught him to run the ball right up to the full back, then turn around and pass the ball back to kevin kilbane. Ireland had great need for a winger, and very little use for a wide counter-attacker. Mourinho himself made his vision for wingers very clear.

When Duff played for Chelsea, he was exceptional (for him).

When he plays elsewhere, he is... patchy, with occasional good stuff.

Now, to me, that means, when he plays with good players, he is 'exceptional'.

But, fuck it, Celtic are awaiting.

What seems to be forgotten about Duff is why Chelsea bought him in the first place - he was brilliant for Blackburn. In their first two seasons back in the PL (2001-03), Duff was fantastic, contributing to their League Cup win and subsequent sixth place finish. His post-Chelsea career is always considered when judging him, but strangely his pre-Chelsea career is largely ignored.

Mourinho has never had an issue with wingers per se, he has simply expected them to be part of the team ethos and to think about their contribution as much when they did not have the ball as when they did. Wingers have traditionally been indulged by managers, Mourinho doesn't really do that with any player in any position.

I think he has fallen out of love somewhat with them however, again, a way of thinking that a lot of managers have come round to. Robben was too injured too often to be reliable, Duff had a good spell but then faded and Sean Wright-Phillips has no footballing brain whatsoever.

Mourinho did try to resurrect the wide ideal at Inter initially but Mancini and Quaresma were disastrous in all sorts of ways and it has led him down the path he has gone this season, wide attackers or wide attacking midfielders. Which is similar to most of the big clubs approach now anyway with the focus more on attacking fullbacks.

Mourinho taught him that, did he? And the ability to go past someone just disappeared? Or course not. You're mental.

hold on. Are you saying that the way that damien duff approached the game didn't change fundamentally between 2003-4 and 2005-6?

I can remember a game where joe cole scored a goal, and kept murdering his man on the outside, and flicking the ball around to teammates when chelsea were winning. Mourinho dragged him off and said that if he was ever going to play for the team again he was going to have to play for the team. (I.e. stop trying to beat the man on the outside and run the risk of losing the ball)
