Sorry, another evolution one:

Why did penguins lose their ability to fly through evolution, when all their natural predators come from the land or sea?

I can't see what they've gained by losing such a useful ability?

Ida' amazingly well preserved as well- one of the best ever found.

Also, there's some controversy over where exactly it fits in the evolutionary tree. It's missing some key lemur features.

I like the little mat they're doing it on. Lego floors are a bitch for sex.

That's a little technique called the reverse cowboy.

Flying is very energy intensive, especially for such a heavy bird. And the specialisations they've developed for fishing don't exactly mesh well with efficient flying. Look at the albatross and try to imagine it zipping through the water. Another albatross comparison - taking off takes a lot of time and effort. By the time a penguin got in the air the seal would already have eaten it.

Hang on - do we know Penguins were heavy before they stopped flying? Maybe they've just let themselves go since they became earth-bound.

And she has I think it's foot or ankle bones that are just like primates in the same branch as humans.

I wasn't implying any chronology there. The point is that as penguins became more specialised for their environment (large fat reserves, streamlined for motion through water etc, they would inevitably become less good at flying, to the extent where there wasn't any selective advantage in retaining the ability. Which came first wasn't really the point, although the evidence suggests that penguins evolved and boomed in population at a time when there had relatively few predators, thanks to the dinosaurs all dying and marine mammals not having evolved yet. If you're really interested in that aspect, there's a recent paper on penguin evolutionhere

Let's not forget that the best thing about penguins is how adorable they are.

Maybe it's less kepping the piss warm and more keeping the piss in at all. When you relax the muscles that keep your bladder warms does blood that was concentrated in them flow more freely to extrmities or something?

Two more questions

What question are the Lego shaggers answering?

Why are all the bodily excretions such different colours - shit brown, snot green, earwax yellow etc. What are they all made of?

My earwax is brown by the way.

The lego shaggers are from the lego new testament which is linked upthread.

I thought the brown colour of faeces was due to dead blood cells excreted with waste matter?

I once tore the scab off a long thin deep cut on my shin and the pus that shot out was a vivid orange, clear liquid like flat Lucozade.

Red blood cells get mostly recycled in the spleen and liver (although some of their components might get excreted).

I just looked it up and we were both partially right -- it's brown due to a combination of bile and bilirubin (a breakdown product of red blood cells).

If we assume that some people are hapless, feckless, gormless and ruthless, then how is it you never hear anyone that's said to be full of hap, replete with feck, loaded with gorm or, indeed, has ruth to spare?
