I have a morbid fascination with the terrace chants (often sick, or exceptionally cruel, or politically dodgy, or all three) that never get mentioned in vanilla-flavoured football reportage, and you'd only know about by trawling fan message boards, word of mouth, or actually being there.

For example, what has been sung/chanted at John Terry (and indeed Wayne Bridge) over the last week?

Apparently last weekend Burnley fans were chanting 'Ashley, where's your wife? Ashley Ashley, where's your wife?' But I did read that in a newspaper so it's not really what you're looking for. I admired the way it encompassed not one but two thoroughly dislikeable players from the opposing team, though.

If Mrs Cole was attending a game it might be more appropriate to chant 'Cheryl, Cheryl, where's Ashley?'

I heard some Arsenal fans at the other end of a Tube I was on earlier today singing, "Carefree, wherever you may be, don't leave your wife with John Terry..." but couldn't quite make out what they said after that.

It was on the telly, but Burnley were singing 'Same on Terry, always cheating' the other night.

There's a big campaign going on at old trafford where people are wearing different colours, and chanting for most of the game against the current board, with loads of different chants, but watching MOTD you'd never know about it.

Back when Ashley Cole was football's most media friendly love-cheat, Chelsea fans chanted 'he's here, he's there, he's shagging everywhere, Ashley Cole'.

At one game it was sung so much John Terry turned around and asked us to stop, presumably because his missus was in the crowd.

That Cardiff one is brilliant.

What's the "Thursday night, Channel 5" thing about?

The Cardiff one is pretty much trad arr whenever this happens though, isn't it? Used to be sung at Gerrard, but with gangster instead of John Terry, which certainly scanned better.

I don't know, but I would guess the "Thursday night, Channel 5" thing is about Liverpool being in the Europa.

I suspect the Evertonian version of the Liverpool "Torres" song is well known, but in case not:

He's half a boy, he's half a girl
Torres, Torres
He looks just like a transvestite
Torres, Torres
He wears a frock
He loves the cock
He sells his arse down Albert Dock
Fernando Torres, Liverpools ladyboy*

*alternative last lines include:
Fernando Torres, Carraghers bit on the side, or
Fernando's body, Britney Spears head.

And then there's the chants about John Terry's mother, as sung by Liverpool.....

What is the song that was being sung by either the Man City or Man Utd* fans during the Carling Cup match the other week that includes the line "fuck off back to London"? The rest of it was incomprehensible, but that line came through loud and clear on the telly. People obviously enjoyed chanting that bit the most.

*I'm guessing it was City fans chanting about London Reds, but it could equally have been United fans singing about a City player from the capital (Sean Wright Phillips? He seems fairly inoffensive though - unless United fans somehow hold him responsible for his guardian's involvement with Live from Studio Five?)

I'm pretty sure they're singing

The city is ours,
The city is ours,
fuck off back to London,
The city is ours

Which is trading on a stereotype I doubt any City fans really believe is true.

I think it was Liverpool fans who came up with:

Carefree, whoever you may be
We are the nouveau CFC
Can you please sit down my wife can't see.
I've been a fan since 2003

When Michael Owen played a pre-season friendly for Liverpool in Dublin after the 1998 WC he was greeted with chants of "You're Welsh and you know you are" (to the tune of "Go West") by visiting Leeds supporters

There's also a particularly unpleasant one that did the rounds during the 2007/2008 season after the death of Frank Lampard's mother. Google it if you want the lyrics but it's not witty and it's not funny.

That one was invented by some of our lot, I'm pretty sure.

The Liverpool one goes thus:

Fuck off, Chelsea FC,
You ain't got no history,
Five European Cups and 18 Leagues,
That's what we call history

Which is shit, and semi-pinched from Arsenal, who sang;

Fuck off, Chelsea FC,
You ain't got no history,
Frank Lampard's fat and all the rest are queer,
And you ain't won the league in 49 years

I'd be surprised if it was, to be honest, seeing as it painted Chelsea in a not-especially-flattering light and it was attributed to United fans on the message board where I found it.
