Any recommendations for sights to see other than the obvious would also be gratefully received. And good value restaurants.

Two lesser known bits of the Smithsonian that we really like (both are on the Mall):

National Museum of the American Indian.

National Museum of African Art.

If the National Museum of the American Indian is in DC, what's the one I went to in New York down by Battery Park?

The funny thing about DC is that pretty much every obvious museum on the mall is worth seeing. The two Ursus mentions are very cool, as is the Asian Art Gallery (that is in the same general area).

The monuments are worth walking past (though it is probably going to be really cold), of which the newish ones (FDR, Korean War, WWII) are interesting just due to them being more recent.

Sometimes people forget the Library of Congress, which is a cool place to see, and sometimes has awesome displays.

If the National Museum of the American Indian is in DC, what's the one I went to in New York down by Battery Park?

That was a temporary installation of a small portion of the collection in the old Customs House while the one in DC was being built (the original collection having been housed on Audubon Terrace in Washington Heights, where it was visited by virtually no one). The Customs House bit is now a branch of the much larger museum in DC.

I second the Asian art recommendation. Really a lovely little place.

If you're near Dupont circle, go have the Key Lime Pie at the Kramerbooks' cafe.

And go to the Philips Collection.

Its lesser-known highlights include Jacob Lawrence's Migration Series and the Rothko Room.

So it looks like being stuck out in National Harbour may not be so bad after all. The hotel I've been booked into turns out to be a long stay place, so I've got my own kitchen and free grocery service.

That's nice. I stayed in one of those once in Orlando, but without the free grocery part, which would have been fantastic.

I'm thinking about checking out Old Town Alexandria tomorrow, as it's apparently not far away. Anything I should definitely see/do there?

I don't know, really.

It's a nice place with lots of cool little shops and restaurants but I don't know what there is to do there other than look at the river. While you're down there, You might want to check out the Torpedo Factory to see what art is going on there. There's a visitor center on King Street that might give you more info if you're into looking at colonial buildings and knowing exactly where George Washington once slept/shit/drank tea.
