Anyone know a decentish hotel (ie with business facilities, but not too expensive) near Forest Heights? And I'm assuming there's not even any point in trying to walk from the hotel to the conference in that part of town. Is that correct?

What in the world are you doing having a conference in Forest Heights?

At any rate, you probably want to get a hotel room a one of the places in the National Harbor (very new w/restaurants, entertainment, etc...)

It's close to Forest Heights, but you'd definitely want a car, as you don't really want to be stuck in that area without one anyway. (And no Metro access except by bus.)

You could also stay in Alexandria, which is relatively close, but you'd still want a car.

It is also very close to my work, so I'd meet you for lunch/drinks if you had the time. (DC-athon?)

That would be cool. I'm planning to spend a few extra days to see the sights. The conference is at the Gaylord National hotel, which Google tells me is right next to Forest Heights. A car isn't really an option as I don't have a licence. It's either walking, taxi or public transport. My understanding is that none of those options are too fun in DC.

It's kind of cruel to have a meeting in DC and stick it in such a shitty place with absolutely no access to Metro. Who are these sadists, GY?

Ah, the Gaylord National is actually in National Harbor. So that makes a lot more sense for a convention. Just pick anything there within your price range.

That hotel also offers a shuttle service to downtown DC ($35 dollar unlimited 3-day pass), which on the whole, is actually reasonable.

You can also get to Alexandria by Water Taxi, and once you get downtown you can get anywhere by Metro.

I've never heard of Forest Heights.

The Gaylord (snicker) is that new monstrosity down by For McNair, right? That's not far from the Nats park and Navy Yard Metro or Waterfront Metro, right?

I don't know the area very well. I've lived in the DC area around a decade and hardly ever go exploring in the actual city. I'm lame like that.

But I'd be up for an OTFathon when you're in town.

Nah, the Gaylord is further south than Fort McNair. Outside of the beltway.

And the Gaylord is close to Dyke Marsh Wildlife Preserve.

By the way.

Oh. I see. Like I said, I don't get down that way very often. I must be thinking of a different Hotel. That sounds like a great place to be in a meeting, but not so great if you want to get out and about in DC. Just phone Matej, he'll drive you wherever you need to go. :)

When are you coming? There hasn't been a DC-athon since Gramsci came to town a couple of years ago (unless you count me and Reed sloping out for a beer and a burger).

That hotel is one of those all-in-one complexes with a huge atrium and all its own shops and restaurants. You'll be using that bus pass plenty to get out of there, unless you're a fan of hermetically sealed artifice, which I somehow doubt.

I'm not (well, only in certain contexts), but I won't have much time to escape during the conference itself. I'll be spending my "spare time" doing interviews and writing copy. It might make sense to switch to a different part of town for the holiday portion of the trip.

That debate between Howard Dean and Newt Gingrich should be interesting.
Otherwise, that stuff looks so dull that it makes what I do look like covering the World Cup in a war zone by comparison.
