The Thierry Henry to RBNY rumour seems to be circulating again (I need to chart it against phases of the moon).

One thing that I don't fully understand: Henry's Barca contract runs through June 2011. Has MLS ever paid a significant transfer fee for a player of Henry's stature?

I don't think so.

I'm not watching it, but from what I'm reading on The Twitter, it sounds like this is going to be a looooong season for Philly. And apparently they're a bunch of thugs.

Dunno if I should have been surprised, but I saw a kid wearing an NYRB jerset in Sydney last week.

Jefe, where's that nice little chart that comes out once or twice a year showing all the players' salaries? I'm thinking that TFC has dropped over a million bucks in salary so far...Vitti, Guevara and Robinson alone must have been $900K.

I know we had an inflated salalry cap because of the various chunks of allocation money we picked up in the first couple of years, but we have to be so far under the cap now that signings are possible. And if so, what's the freaking hold up?

No, not thugs. Just young players with nerves and not much speed.
I haven't committed emotionally to this team (or financially) yet- but I was pleasantly surprised at the instant attachment I felt to them as I watched them play. They passed the ball around quite nicely, didn't have much of a threat up top and were bitch slapped on the counter time and time again (lack of speed and 3 at the back will do this).

I like Nowak and it's pretty clear the team was built in his image. We'll see, but I feel good about this team..

Gramsci, I think that all versions of those charts are based on the Players' Union data, which seems to come out in the late summer (you can see the 2009 data at the link).

That's the ticket, Urs, cheers.

Total 2009 compensation of players from last year that we've dumped (including Fellinga and Dichio): 1.62 million.

Total 2009 compensation of the three players brought in so far this year: $224K.

Is the teacher's union really that hard up?

Does anybody know if the $2.5M salary cap is there just for base salary or includes everything under "guaranteed compensation"?

Base salary I believe.

Steven Goff should have the current list fairly soon, if history holds.

Then we have way over a half million in space going to waste.

Preki, of course, is getting his excuses in early:

"In the short time I've been here, I haven't seen too many positive things around the team. It's a very negative setup around the city in terms of the press and media … [and] unless we get together and stick together — as a city, as an organization here — we're not going to go too far."

I hate him already.

Apparently we've signed former Red Bull Jon Conway as out backup keeper and also Argentine/Croat Martin Saric, another fucking midfielder.

At this rate, I think it;s entirely possible that Dichio will come out of retirement. Apparently, numbers were so thin in practice this week that he was drafter to play CB.

How has this slipped down to the 3rd page on Football?

Anyway, another Superclasico, another Galaxy win. That's two shutouts to start the season for the G's, something the team has never done before. All with a very young back four. Fear us.

Fake Sigi rips MLS a new one about the MLSsoccer.com rollout disaster. One of the many embarrassments about this whole thing, which I didn't think of until this morning, is the URL itself. MLSsoccer.com? So that's "Major League Soccer soccer dot com"? Why not ATMmachine.com?

I get that, but the Galaxy couldn't beat Real Salt Lake. Deep pockets can only take you so far. Something that hasn't been discussed all that much is now Donovan is officially a DP. The instance of him being grandfathered in...now there was preferential treatment for the Galaxy. But now the Gs have two DPs. So if we want a third, AEG is going to have to cough up the money (though Beckham is going to be gone soon). I'm not so sure that AEG is willing to keep on throwing money at the team. Plus there's the small matter of actually getting a player to join the league. So I don't really see this as the boon to the rich teams that a lot of others do.

It's a potential boon, not an outright gift. I actually think that it is probably designed more to help NYRB (who have deeper pockets, and have not yet spunked huge amounts on DPs).

That Fake Sigi piece is definitive.

So guess who drove 13 hours to watch an MLS game.

<----- This guy. It was fun but exhausting.

Everything you heard about Newark, its true. Although Harrison has a certain rust belt charm that made me feel at home. RBA is nice, but I dont see anything that couldnt be replicated with a renovation of most mls stadiums.

Did you go to the Ironbound?

It's the best thing about Newark.

I wish, we drove past it and it seemed like a cool hood. We stayed by the airport unfortunately. I think next year were going to try and work something out with Monster.
Anyway, rba is a million times better than giant stadium and both set of fans made quite a ruckus. I wont say that it felt "european" but it definitely felt major league. Which is not a feeling you get in say kc, in a minor league baseball stadium.

He's also been talking about the expansion of the Designated Player slots, which seems to be a not at all subtle way to boost the likes of the Galaxy and NYRB.

And Toronto and Seattle - the teams that actually make money. Preki's decision to only carry 20 players to start the season suddenly makes sense. Maybe.
