Nice catch, and I bet you the owner is on SSI or something similar! (Aren't handicapped parking spots ubiquitous only because they're required by the Americans with Disabilities Act, anyway? It's Big Government stealing our parking spots and giving them to people who are too lazy to come to the grocery store early!)

That's right. I had forgotten but heard a piece on NPR about it this morning. April 19 has become a weird sort of anti-government action day for the right-wingers. (Not to be confused with the stoners' 4/20 holiday tomorrow.) It must be all hands on deck for Secret Service and FBI staffers today.

To be fair, none of that iconography (the stuff I can read/interpret, anyway) actually expresses anti-government sentiments. Anti-federal government sentiment maybe, but mainly just racist stupidity.

It's a pretty good indication of how far-gone some of these people are that they feel oppressed by the postal service.

More about the truck featured above.
A photo of the truck hit the Web a few days ago, went viral on car and other blogs and finally came to the attention of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, an advocacy group for American Muslims. On Wednesday morning, the group complained to the DMV that the plate contained a white supremacist and neo-Nazi statement.
A few hours later, the DMV agreed that the plate contains a coded message: The number 88 stands for the eighth letter of the alphabet, H, doubled to signify "Heil Hitler," said CAIR's Ibrahim Hooper. "CV" stands for "Confederate veteran" -- the plate was a special model embossed with a Confederate flag, which Virginia makes available for a $10 fee to card-carrying members of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. And 14 is code for imprisoned white supremacist David Lane's 14-word motto: "We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children."

Your link's broken, UA. Since I can't read the full story, I can't really judge. On the face of it, it would seem to be a bit of a stretch - if it's a coded message, it's pretty damn well coded (although the 88 thing is fairly well known, I think). And it seems a bit bizarre to complain about a coded message given the rest of the truck. Then again, if he actually asked for those specific letters, I can't think of any other reason why he would have done.
More to the point, what the fuck is the government doing giving out license plates with the Confederate flag on them? Isn't it funny how so much of "real America" seems to consist of places that romanticise violent secession in defence of slavery?

It is definitely a "vanity plate"; the standard sequence in Virginia is different. And I was going to make a similar comment about the confederate flag on the plate; the South is just different (see, e.g., Jeff Davis' birthday holidays, several state flags, etc.)

In terms of well-known code, 14 and CV are in the US what 88 is in Britain. Taken together, they're unmistakeable.
Can't nearly any approved/respectable group get commemorative plates* approved? The real question is why Treason In Defense Of Slavery remains respectable Down There.
*I'm doing this on my phone which, hilariously, insists on interpreting that word as "slaves"...

It depends on the state, some are much more lenient/willing to do anything for a buck than others.
But yes, I think we all agree that it is the broader question that is at issue, rather than this particular manifestation.

"Treason in defense of slavery" isn't respectable (except among neo-Nazis); they've simply chosen to redefine what the confederate flag symbolizes. It's hard to tell anymore how much of it is residual sore loser syndrome. I think mainly it's just another symbol of the liberal/conservative culture war. If the liberal elites want to get rid of the confederate flag, we're gonna cling to it and claim it's about "heritage." On top of that there is simple denial about the reality of slavery and segregation/inequality in the South, and a strong reflex reaction against any attempts to confront it. It's easier to tell themselves a nice honorable story about states rights and cultural heritage and thus avoid the guilt.
So most of the people who defend the confederate flag are themselves convinced by the revisionist history that it's not and never was about slavery. The truck driver above, otoh, appears to be keepin' it very real and would be a fringe exception (as I hope would be evident to most casual observers).

The thing is, this is probably true simply because so many people defiend it and some are going to be young and/or stupid. The people who did the revisionism knew damn well what it was about. It's not exactly a coincidence that several states added Confederate flags to their state flags during the 50s.

Well yeah, it's not really revisionism unless you know what you're revising.
The "they" in "they've simply redefined" refers to those who knew what they were doing. The "most" who defend the flag refers to everybody who goes along with the repackaged reality, most of them non-reflectively.
