Cup final is this Wednesday, with CFR Cluj looking to retain the trophy (they've won the last two), and thus win their second double in three years, and add to their astonishing haul of trophies of late (having not won anything in the first 101 years of their existence they'll have won 6 in basically two years if they win this one - one of those was a super cup though, which is not really significant)

I'd tell you who was coming up, except that both parts of the second tier still have a fair few games to play yet and won't be done until June 11th

Is this the first time ever that no Bucharest club has finished in the top three?

Vaslui is a small unfashionable town in Moldova (Eastern Romania) on the border of the Republic of Moldova. They're quite a likeable club actually, owned by an ex-referee Adrian Parumboiu and managed by Marius Lacatus. They're also the home of Wesley, Brazilian favourite of Steveeeee and Erwin's podcast who came from Leixoes and to my surprise is still there a year and a half later and very much the fans' favourite.

They were in the Europa League this year and went out one round before the group stages to AEK Athens. (They were also in it a year earlier too, via the Intertoto, losing in the first round to Slavia Prague)

It's great to hear that Welsey's succeeded in Romania, because he really flopped in Spain. Such a great player and a very down to earth guy, I'd love to see back in Portugal again but he just doesn't have the image the "grandes" desire.

To ua:

Can't say for sure, but I'd say it's fairly certain to be. In fact they've been dropping by the year. Highest Bucharest team 3 years ago - 1st, 2 years ago - 2nd, Last year - 3rd, this year - 4th. Looking good

(One sports paper pointed out the other day that in every single pro-team sport in Romania this year's champions are from outside Bucharest - Ice Hockey, Mens and womens handball (which is a big deal), basketball (M&F), rugby union, water polo, and one or two others which escape me)

I think the fact that he's thriving and seemingly happy at Vaslui says a lot about him Steveeeee. It's a pretty small place and not close to anywhere else, so it's not the kind of place a big shot would want to to stick around in. (I mean Leixoes is not much to write home about either, but it's effectively a suburb of Porto so it's a bit different)

Last night's cup final was one of the most tedious football games I've ever not had the pleasure to witness. My chagrin at not being able to watch Romanian football on TV evaporated in the space of 120 action-empty minutes. And these were 2 of Romania's best 3 teams this season.

For what it's worth CFR won on penalties to secure their 3rd cup in a row and second double in three years.
