The Eagles already have a pretty good running game.

Pretty good, but not great and pretty terrible in short yardage (although their finally having an actual FB will help also).

By the way, the psychological element of this with Andy Reid is, I think, interesting. His press conference last night, when he discussed what had happened with his sons (both arrested for drugs and other things over the past two years), and how that has affected his thoughts about Vick and second chances were surprising, and as un-Andy Reid-like as anything I can remember in 10 years of him talking to the media.

I can see a lot of value in goal-line and short yardage situations.

But there's a reason so many great dual-threat and/or triple-option and/or wishbone college quarterbacks never do anything in the NFL.

Those QBs don't ever do much in the NFL, but that's mainly because teams are usually looking for full-time QBs and those guys can't pass at all. In this case, the Eagles (barring injury to McNabb, and maybe even then) won't need Vick to be a full-time QB, just a situational player who may not always line up at the QB spot. Plus, he's being paid like a situational player and not a starting QB.

Also, it's probably worth mentioning that while Vick is not a great passing QB, he's not exactly Tommy Frazier, either.

My hope would be that the Eagles view Vick as another guy who is dangerous with the football in his hands and that they'll find ways to make him valuable. The Eagles offensive coaches and Reid have been very good at this historically.

Oh sure. Otherwise, he never would have been drafted by the Falcons.

I agree with your assessment of how he'll fit in as a role-player. Sort of a rich-man's Antwoine Randel-El, if you will, but more fullback than wide receiver.

Also, it didn't occur to me before last night, but even with his less than awesome numbers, he still might be a better back-up for the Eagles than who they've got. AJ Feely and who, exactly? I don't know.

The funny thing is that in the run up to the announcement, the Eagles were not among the names being tossed around in the press as possible destinations for Vick. I heard Miami, Baltimore, Green Bay and Pittsburgh. Everyone seemeed to be fixated on teams that might want to use him in the wildcat, but nobody seemed to be thinking much about the simpler issue of "who really needs a back-up quarterback?"

I think "rich-man's Antwan Randle El" is exactly what they hope he'll be.

The Eagles are, publicly, very happy with their backup QB situation. Their 2nd string QB is Kevin Kolb, a guy they drafted to be McNabb's eventual replacement (and a guy that was very well thought of by the stat-centric football folks coming out of college, but who was otherwise completely under the radar). Kolb hasn't looked great in limited play, though, and people are starting to doubt whether he has what it takes to start in the NFL. Plus, he got hurt on Monday.

My guess is that the Eagles will cut Feeley as soon as Kolb is healthy again, although Reid said that they might keep 4 QBs.

The only potential saving grace for McNabb, is that there will be another segment of the fan base that despises Vick for his crimes

From what I can tell from man-on-the-street interviews on the radio and from local Web sites, people aren't happy about this signing.

I don't see why they'd carry four quarterbacks. Feely doesn't really offer much in this scenario, as far as I can tell.

I think they'd only carry 4 QBs if they are worried that (a) Kolb's injuries will linger, and (b) that Vick either won't be game ready, due to suspension or fitness, for a while.

Heliotrope, there was a poll on, I think, philly.com that had the reaction being fairly split. That said, neither talk radio or internet polls are probably all that good of a gauge. I think a good indicator of the actual reaction may be if they start losing season ticket subscribers in any real number or local advertisers start dropping off due to protests.

Yeah, I'm waiting to see if these cries of "I'm done with the Eagles" will translate to lower attendance or viewer statistics or jersey sales.

I doubt it.

I imagine the Eagles talked to their major advertisers before they signed him.

AJ is safe- due to the third QB rule.
"Teams will be permitted an Active List of 45 players and an Inactive List of eight players for each regular-season and postseason game. Provided that a club has two quarterbacks on its 45-player Active List, a third quarterback from its Inactive List is permitted to dress for the game, but if he enters the game during the first three quarters, the other two quarterbacks are thereafter prohibited from playing."

The third quarterback is the 46th player, so you don't have to waste a 45th spot on a guy who will, in all likelihood, never play.

Vick will be listed as a WR or something else. The whole thing is just odd. Regardless of how you feel, if he deserves another chance or not, the Eagles don't need him. And no one can explain why they brought him in. The Eagles' front office are about as conservative as you can get when it come to character issues- none of this makes sense.

Vick just isn't all that good, is he?

Nope. A faster, less accurate Kordell Stewart.

Seriously, WTF were the Iggles thinking?

It may be my favorite rant of all-time.

The bit about Brad Childress in the Sonic drive-thru is one of my favorite lines ever. I'm so happy that stupid-looking 1800s-mustached loser is hated as much as I hate him.

That's a rant for the ages, especially:

Not only am I sick of this dipshit, but I’m sick of being sick of him. And I resent that everyone is so tired of hating him, that I’m beating a dead horse by still hating him.

Brett Favre used to be the best player in football, a man with a brilliant story, the guy who beat booze and painkiller addictions and won a Superbowl.

But that was over a decade ago. Now he's just a publicity-seeking nuisance who won't accept that he's done and fuck off gracefully.

He's just a bad NFL coach.

The whole reason the Vikings don't have a viable quarterback (and had to give Favre a job) is that during his first month in the job, Childress picked a needless fight with Daunte Culpepper to prove that Childress was Da Man. Culpepper left, and the Vikings have been mediocre ever since. It makes the McDaniels/Cutler fiasco of 2009 look like a masterpiece of man-management.

Only tangentially related to the football, but - Donte Stallworth gets one month in jail for killing a guy while driving drunk, while Plaxico Burress gets two years for accidentally shooting himself in the leg?

I do not understand the American legal system.
