There was talk of Sevilla, but they've gone for renewing Antonio Alvarez's contract for 2010-11. Not sure if any clubs 'big enough' for him are going to have vacancies. He'd be a real coup for someone like Betis if they go up.

There are also rumours that Fiorentina is quite interested, and I think it would be a good fit for him.

Last weekend of the Liga Adelante today, and it's between Hércules and Betis for the final promotion spot. Level on points, Hércules win the "private goal difference", Betis at home to already promoted Levante and Hércules away to relegation threatened Real Unión. Should be a nailbiting finish. Come on the boys from Alicante!

Sevilla make their second signing of the summer, after the capture of Mouhamadou Dabo for the right-back slot vacated by the dispensed-with Stankevicius. It's one Tiberio Guarente from Atalanta. Monchi has been singing his praises, saying he'll control the midfield and bring us Italian grit and style. Any of the Italian contingent here have anything to say? A Maresca type player? Can he be all that, if he isn't in South Africa?

Rick Derris will no doubt be chuffed to discover that Cornellà-El Prat has won the "Stadium Business Award" as "Best stadium in the world 2010". They beat off competition from Coventry, in second place, and, err, the O2 Arena in third...

And Hércules have done it, winning 2-0 today, and rendering Betis's 4-0 win against Levante useless...

Rumours linking Tuncay with a move to Valencia, any truth in that in Spain?

Haven't heard anything about that, and AS and Marca offer no clues. Valencia very strapped for cash, so not sure if they'd even be able to match Stoke wages...

This is the perfect opportunity for Hercules to buy US national team midfielder/striker Gomez from Pachuca.

I note with interest that Sevilla heroes (and OTF 'favourites') Javi Navarro and Pablo Alfaro are in new jobs...Alfaro now the manager of Recreativo, and Navarro now defensive coach at SFC...

Transfer gossip today in AS includes José María del Nido laughing off as derisory a supposed €22m bid for Navas from Man United...and an interesting one, that Raúl might be going to Schalke - would do him good to try another big league...

Any news on Guti leaving Madrid for Besiktas or is that just the tittle tattle of Turkish tabloids?

Sorry to disappoint but Guarente isn't as technical or composed on the ball as Maresca. He is, however, a decent player who can play practically anywhere in midfield (what the Italians call a 'jolly') and who runs an awful lot.

He came through the same Atalanta youth team that contained Riccardo Mantolivo and Giampaolo Pazzini but has had to work a bit more to make it to the top. Indeed, earlier on in his career when he was on loan at Verona he had to take a year off football because of a rare viral infection to his nervous system.

The season before last he was one of Atalanta's better players and there was talk of him making the national team but he got bogged down by Atalanta's relegation last season so couldn't really shine.

Personally surprised to see Sevilla sign him, he had been linked to Napoli and Parma before (i.e. mid-ranking rather than top sides). Don't see him as being a huge success but he should be a good player if he settles in.

Cheers for the background, pawlu. So it seems he's solid without being spectacular. SFC haven't been the same since Poulsen and Keita left - maybe he can at least contribute to filling the former's boots. Guarente and Zokora could be a snappy midfield pairing - leave it up to Navas and Capel to do the fancy stuff.

A replacement for Poulsen is exactly how I'd see Guarente. Runs a lot and works hard.
