Super Mario Bros for Wii, anyone?

I just broke through to World 3, so I'm pleased.

I'm looking forward to Super Mario Bros for Wii. The girlfriend has a Wii, and likes Mario games, and this is 4 player co-op, isn't it?

(I'm asking because I was under the impression Bioshock 2 would be 4-player co-op...BUT IT ISN'T. I feel so betrayed).

Yes, it's four player and it's excellent. I can't say enough about it. It's challenging, well-designed, complex, with good animation and transitions. The whole package is top- notch.

My girlfriend's 2 kids have got the Wii and, although I usually find computer games fairly boring after about 10 minutes, I must admit I'm quite enjoying playing New Super Mario Bros with them.

Can't compare it with any previous Mario incarnations as I kind of lost interest with video games after Scramble and Defender but it's all good, wholesome fun. (Could do with a hyperspace button though).

After watching events in Vancouver over the last few days (the kids have also been enjoying them), a good bet might be to get hold of a decent winter games package. Although I think I did see mention on Charlie Brooker's Gameswipe of Wii Surgeon, which gives you a chance to Wii-eld your scalpel and perform a bit of virtual surgery.

Civ 5, though... woah, the thought of spending the early hours of the morning commanding the Filipino advance on Reykjavik is very tempting. It's been years since I bought a game for the PC. I think the last one was Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, in fact, which was a great (for its time) sci-fi twist on the Civ theme.

Just looked at the preview site, and at last, they've done something about one of my huge bugbears with the previous games, and replaced the grid movement with hexes. No more innacurate diagonals! Yes!

The additional bonus is that it makes the game look more like Settlers.

We got the kids the Mario Winter Olympics game for Christmas and it's a lot of fun. Some of the stuff is straightforward and sensible, like downhill skiing, luge and snowboarding. But some, like figure skating is bizarre and rather unsatisfying. However, there is a whole 'fantasy games' section where things go right off the rails and is much more interesting. Like a course that's an exact copy of a Mario Kart circuit, except that you downhill ski it. And another where you ski jump through space, a la Mario Galaxy.

Playing Metal Gear Solid 3, for the first time. I'm catching up to games I missed (I sorta of stopped playing console games except for PES/FIFA around 2004-05), I borrowed it from a friend.

I don't get why the metal gear is such a great weapon platform. I think a submarine is a more impressive weapon platform (stealthier, more mobine and deadlier), unless you're in love with the idea of mechas. Which of course, the creators of MGS are.

The first couple of hours were frustrating, until I got the hang of sneaking up on enemies and slitting their throats.

The last metal gear I played was on the PS1 more than 10 years ago. I forgot how much Deus Ex stole from it, the sneaking around. Although Deus Ex allowed you to customize your character more and limited your choice in weapons and items. But the games remind me of each other, especially the larger maps compared to MGS1.

I wish someone would make a proper sequel to deus ex.

Why do they put up the rdiculously long user names of team mates on MW2. They take up half the screen and if you have a friendly and an opponent in the same area often make it impossible to see the latter. Also, what motivates hackers to cheat? I just don't get it.

On a technical issue, in order to solve conflict between net users and x-box users we bought a wireless router, which also has the provison to cable if necessary.

Two laptops (one Mac, one PC) and a desktop work fine with this set up. However, the X-Box goes from around 17 possible games on the old direct connection to one or two and often never finds one at all when either wireless or with the cable plugged into the router.

We are in a shit area for wi-fi and have an ADSL connection (no cable option, this is Australia).

Any assistance or suggestions gratefully received

Mine as well. It's simply astonishing. I still play it.

Alright, so our Wii is working out pretty well, except our daughter--2 years, 8 months--wants to play Wii Sports all the time. We should have never let her seen us playing it. I don't mind that she wants to play, it's just that she doesn't have the coordination of pressing buttons and swinging the remote at the same time, and she won't let us help her do anything, so it always turns into her getting angry at us wanting to help her, and us getting frustrated because the game doesn't move along. We saw that there's some sort of Ni Hao Kai Lan game, which if we bought we're sure she would never let us do anything else ever again, not just on the Wii, but life in general.

You don't need to coordinate any buttons in the tennis or baseball games (for batting anyway). And there's quite a few sports in Wii Sports Resort that don't need buttons either.

She always wants to bowl, which requires releasing the B button. And she wants to play tennis also, so she can press the A button to toss the ball up, but then she turns to us to say "I did it! I did it!" and doesn't swing to serve.

Wolf2--most of the time she's sweet, some of the time infuriating, and yes, some of the time she's both.
