I got Brutal Legend at the weekend, and I can't really decide what I think of it yet.

Parts of it are brilliant, and you have to admire the love and effort that's gone into the game, but the main battle sections are just confusing and not much fun. It's a bit like Spore in that it's a ambitious idea that doesn't really make sense when expanded into a full game.

I'm loving the music though.

Speaking of board games on XBLA (as I was on the previous page), I played a bit of Panzer General: Allied Assault over the weekend. It's got very little to do with the old Panzer General game, though. It's basically a combination collectible card game (though as far as I know there's no cards to actually buy) and board game, a bit like Armageddon Empires if you know it. It's very addictive indeed, though it plays quite slowly.

If you're looking for a diverting internet-based game, give Pseudobabble a try. I'm telling anyone I can about it, because it's brilliantly fun.

How to describe it...well here's a description I've given elsewhere: You are given 30 seconds to order a random assortment of words into any sentence you'd like, and then vote for the sentence you like the most. Votes = points.

You'll need to create a log in, but it's easy peasy. And it's played by a quite chatty little group of rather sweet people.

It's based on an old PopCap game.

Ah bollocks. The new Monkey Island's been released. So much for getting a good night's sleep.

Everyone seems to be getting excited about the new Modern Warfare, but I just don't see it. They all talk about how, yes, the single player is linear, but the multiplayer is fantastic. Isn't that still just half a game?

Megaman x-3. Started it last night after re-downloading Zsnes. I've dabbled before but never got far. Beat one of the 8 bosses for the first time (the bumblebee one). It's nails.

Why does a linear singleplayer campaign make it half a game? COD 4 was linear, so were Half Life 1 and 2.

CoD4 had a great single player campaign, if a little dated in terms of linearity (that's definitely a word) but the multiplayer was what made it a phenomenon. I have no doubt that the big attraction for the new version will be its multiplayer, too.

But I'm hoping the single player will be a good step forward too.

How much is it gonna be sold for, near you? Game are trying to tell me £50 for my pre-ordered xbox copy is reasonable, or something. Is it fuck.

I don't see that linearity means dated. If done badly, then, yeah, it's a downside. But most of the great single-player FPSes of recent years have been strictly linear - COD 4, HL 2 and its episodes, Bioshock. It lets you tell a much more cinematic (for want of a better word) story than an open world does. And that's always been COD's strength as a single-player game, especially the Infinity Ward ones. It would make no sense to lose that aspect of the game. Much as I love Red Faction Guerilla, the narrative is utter bollocks. And I'd much rather a world with both linear and open world shooters than a world with only one kind of shooter.

Well, I'll be buying it on PC, and I think it's £35. Basically Activision are whacking £10 on it over their usual price.

Anyone looking forward to the latest Aliens Vs Predator game? It's considered to be one of the tentpole releases of 2010 at the moment. The last version of the game I played back in 2001 was immersive but lacking in a gripping narrative, which is something I always look for in a game. Hopefully the makers have addressed this.

Oh I wouldn't say that linearity equals dated, but you can have dated linearity, if you see what I mean. I...am not sure if I'd put CoD 4 in that category, but I could understand the accusation. It feels more railroaded than Half Life 2 and Bioshock (way to pick two of the most incredible single player games ever, i mean give CoD a chance! Heh).

A good AvP game would excite me, definitely. I'll have a look.

I typed in a very long response that didn't get through yesterday, which I am now sulking about.

In a nutshell, I understand all games have to have some degree of linearity, but I found the acuteness of MW uncomfortable. It felt more on a rail than the Half Life 1 level On A Rail.

I'd accept that there are some elements of MW that seem dated - mainly the infinitely respawning enemies in some sections. But I really don't buy the argument that the linearity itself makes it dated. It's hard to think of a top class, story driven shooter of recent years that wasn't firmly linear. In addition to the ones listed above, you've got Uncharted 1 and 2, Halo 3, Killzone 2, Gears of War 2. All the open world shooters have had pretty weak stories, unless you count GTA, but I wouldn't call it a shooter.

By the way, I played through episode four of Tales of Monkey Island last night. It's a lot of fun. It didn't quite reach the heights of the last episode, but it was close. They really seem to have nailed the puzzles, which were logical without being too easy (by Telltale standards anyway). Incidentally, Telltale are giving away one episode of their Wallace & Grommit games for free until Monday.

I bought Lego Batman for my Nintendo DS on Friday.

Are all the 'Lego' series games like this? I ask, because I've not been able to put it down since I bought it.

If Lego Indiana Jones and Lego Star Wars are close to being as good as Lego Batman, I'll pick them up for Xmas...

I use ZSNES. Only for the Super Star Wars games that were released on the Super Nintendo though...

For some reason ZSNES will work fine on my Dell laptop but crashes on my Toshiba netbook...
