And it's probably worth remembering that he played the best football of his career under the tutelage of Terry Venables, who from what I've read used to just 'wind him up and let him go'.

Gascoigne has said his time at rangers was his happiest, a team that drinks together etc, but realistically, as soon as there was no gaffer or teammates in his life, he was always a nap to go off the rails. Remember the disturbing documentary??

Let me get this right - Ferguson would have sorted out Gascoigne's alcoholism by rooming him with Bryan Robson?

I am not an expert on addiction so maybe that is why I can't see how it would work.

the worst influences on him seem to have been from his home life - his father & jimmy 5 bellies in the main. they seem to be the people who help him towards the self-destruct button.

anyone i have ever heard talking about gascoigne has spoken about his warmth and generosity, and i am sure this is all true.

i find it very sad that someone with his obvious talent finds himself with no good friends close enough to help steer him into a better life.

Unfortunately, his talent is on the football pitch (although he does seem to have a genuine empathy with children)

Aside from this, he appears to be someone who has little social skills and no critical faculties about other people especially those that fawn over and leech off him.

Obviously, this is a long-winded way of saying that he is, as we say in Wales, twp. Talented, popular, generous but twp nonetheless.

(Twp is the word that, had he spoken Welsh, Bobby Robson would have used instead of "Daft as a brush)

Don't forget, though, that Ferguson is Jesus with everyone once again after leading his rag-tag side of bargain-bin rejects and underachievers bought on the cheap to the European Cup final.

There is no European Cup Final.

There is hardly much of a UEFA!™ Champions!™ League!™ Football!™ Final!™ 2008!™ this year to talk about either.

Isn't everyone else giving up between May 17th and June 7th?

Did anyone make such a claim here?

Ferguson himself would disagree. In McGrath's autobiography, Ferguson writes that he had to be seen to get rid of McGrath and Whiteside to show the squad who was boss.

The only club manager that ever helped McGrath with his addiction was Graham Taylor.

Oh nobody here is saying it. You won't find any AIG-tinted specatacles here.

But the lickspittle columnists are all at it, presumably because it's six years since Fergie's last book and the ghosts can smell the £££££.

A real sign of his decline is that they now call him "Football Star Paul "Gazza" Gascoigne". Are there any other famous Paul Gascoignes knocking about that we don't know of?
last month the divorced father-of-one tried paying a £20,000 deposit on a £140,000 Ferrari before his trousers fell down to reveal he was not wearing underpants.
Am I a bad person for laughing at that?

In an interview with David Frost this week, Alex Ferguson also thinks he could have helped Gascoigne, "we had Bobby Charlton here who was a Geordie, who could have helped him settle in, our captain, Bryan Robson was also a Geordie, who could have helped him..."

and he goes on to list the other Geordies at the club. But the first two people he could think of to help a guy who is an alcoholic and has OCD (and while it may not have been the case then, it's certainly public knowledge now) are a man twice his age who he's got nothing but geography and profession in common with, and the biggest drinker at the club.

Ferguson might not have been able to help, but he would have done a lot more than that idiot Venables.

If my aunty had balls she'd be my uncle.

Gascoigne might have gone on a different track had he not effectively squandered his career and perhaps spent plenty of time in his cups refelecting on what might have been.

He is one of the finest players I ever had the privilige to see play and it is all terribly sad.

I could never understand why that aunty-balls-uncle line should qualify as a proper response to a point. Sometimes it does, but sometimes it does not.
