Fixture list out today

www.a-league.com.au/default.aspx?s=newsdisplay&id=27203

Top six (of ten!) qualify for finals.

More teams, more grounds (SCG and Subiaco scheduled for games), more Saturday fixtures for Queensland Roar (seventeen!)

Great to see the season go well into March. They should start later and go even later, I reckon.

At a quick glance we have three games at home in the first eight weeks. Two are six days apart. Then we play Sydney at Subi. Capacity 46,000. Our average crowd 8000-ish. Agoraphobics need not apply.

Not sure finishing in March does much for any home based Socceroos who then won't play regularly for three months.

Plus Wellington are playing a home game in Christchurch and Sydney have a home game at Parramatta - that seems odd since that's where the proposed West Sydney franchise would be based.

I understand in Sydney they have other sports to go up against, but the Sunday games do have an impact on the atmosphere..Oh well, hopefully an improved season will see some more punters through the door.

Last game of the season at home against Melbourne, that's something to look forwards too though!!

Maybe they are trying out a game at Parramatta stadium to test the waters so to speak?

The preseason cup has been scrapped so we're getting a flurry of rumours about glamour friendlies almost all involving teams with Australian players - Everton, Celtic, Fulham, Blackburn, Galatasaray, etc. One apparently confirmed fixture is Perth Glory against "premiership giants" Wolves who don't appear to have any Australian players.

Brisbane/Queensland Roar are going to give a trial to Motherwell's Bob Malcolm, a player who loves drink driving but doesn't care much for the pope - he allegedly once signed an autograph "Bob Malcolm, FTP."

Wellington Phoeniz are trying to take their show on the road: www.skysport.co.nz/Default.aspx?tabid=55&cid=5836

However, that has a lot more to do with Westpac Stadium in Wellington being unavailable than any actual PR/Marketing efforts, apparently. The first date (Dec 12, in Palmerston North, city slightly north of Wellington) was moved due to stadium re-turfing. The second (Jan 30, in Christchurch) due to a scheduling conflict ... with a rock concert.

I was dreading the advent of a "Top Six Finals Series", and sure enough, we are getting one. It means that one team who are closer to the bottom of the table than the top, gets a crack at the finals... which is nonsense, really.

But of course it means more games where the FFA can double the price of tickets....

Top 6! How does that work out? Do the top two teams on the ladder get a double chance as in AFL?

Wellington Phoenix sign English veteran forward Chris Greenacre from Tranmere Rovers:

The Phoenix should be desperate to replace Shane Smeltz. They have almost nothing up front now that he's gone.

Adelaide United have signed midfielder Adam Hughes, an Australian, from Drogheda United in Ireland...a signing which has generated massive indifference amongst fans, judging by the lack of comments on local message boards....

Adelaide are playing eleven home games on a Friday evening next season. Have they asked for this?

Yeah, I've just noticed this....a bizarre decision, as I thought that Friday evening was once voted least popular timeslot by AU fans. God knows whose idea this was. I can see another season of "why can't Adelaide United fill Hindmarsh?" coming up...

The already extremely annoying Gold Coast owner Clive Palmer is correctly complaining about his club having five out of their first seven fixtures away from home. This is ridiculous scheduling.

Also, I just saw John Aloisi enjoying lunch with his missus and the kids. I didn't get a close enough look at his plate to see what kind of food fuels one to become a Seria A, EPL, La Primera and World Cup goalscorer and swiftly burn out in the early 30s.

I feel a bit sorry for Aloisi, but I've not actually seen him play for Sydney, so I don't know quite how bad he has been.

I have a feeling I have posted this before, but I always felt he was very unlucky when he was at Coventry. He would generally always follow up a great performance with an injury or a suspension.

In this video - he scores two goals against Villa in our first ever league win at Villa Park.
Unfortunately he followed it up by lamping Danny Mills for a late tackle in the next game against Charlton. Red card, out for three games.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=memkGJQahPA

I was pretty disappointed we sold him in 2001. We had just been relegated, and he would have been the most suitable of our strikers for the Championship.

Is he still in contention for Australia?

The continental shift continues at Sydney FC with the A-League club confirming the capture of Slovak international Karol Kisel for 2009/10.

The 32-year-old former Sparta Prague and Slovan Liberec wide-man is well known to new Sydney coach Vitezslav Lavicka and played in the UEFA Cup as recently as last year.

“Karol is a highly regarded player and was a priority signing for Vitja (coach Lavicka) who coached him at both Slovan Liberec and Sparta Prague,” Sydney CEO Stefan Kamasz said.

“He has a wealth of experience and can play on either the left or right and will no-doubt prove an invaluable asset to the team.”
Kisel, who has made 23 senior appearances for Slovakia, will arrive in Sydney on April 20 - a week ahead of the playing squad's pre-season training starting on April 27.

To be fair he had shocker last season with Sydney FC, it was hard to watch sometimes as a mix of poor finishing and plain bad luck took its toll.

I think Aloisi will be about this season too though, and with a new coach maybe he'll get his head straight and have a better year?

If he doesn't hit the mark early though I can see him losing his spot, there are some very talented youth breaking into the first team this season.

On of my favourite moments last season was Aloisi running to the crowd to point at the number on his back after scoring a twice taken penalty (he missed the first time) and generally giving it the big I am.
