Years ago on one of Baker and Kelly's numerous radio shows somebody rung up claiming to have played in a Sunday league game against a team involved in the music industry (roadies, label employees?), on some park in London during the early-80's.
With kick off approaching and the opposition still minus one player a Limousine pulls on to the park, interrupts several existing games, before pulling up at the touchline where out steps Steve Strange.
The game starts with Strange showing brief bursts of involvement before slipping off to his Limo for refreshment, largely consisting of champagne on ice. This back and forth motion continues for a few more minutes until the referee finally as enough and sends him off. Strange willingly accepts his dismissal, gets in the Limo, and buggers off, reinterrupting the other games again as he goes.

And when Dimitar Berbatov does that, people talk like he's a misunderstood genius.

WHAT HAPPENED AT SPELLBOUND'S FIRST BIRTHDAY (SAT 17th APRIL!)
And so, we are One. (Actually, we're one-and-a-quarter now, but we got a bit distracted, sorry about that...)

Back in April, Spellbound celebrated its first birthday, and we thought that landmark deserved to be marked with something a little bit special. And so, live in the Studio Bar, we were very proud to present the mighty 80s cyberpunk pioneers SIGUE SIGUE SPUTNIK, now down to a duo of fishnet-masked frontman (and original Blitz Kid) Martin Degville and his partner Johan on keyboards, reworking the Flaunt It! classics like “21st Century Boy”, “Hey Jayne Mansfield Superstar!”, “Sex Bomb Boogie” and, of course, “Love Missile F1-11” in a new 'electronik' style.

Prowling the stage in a pair of Lord Melchett-style gold-sprayed “au contraire, Blackadder!” breasts and a sort of fetish kimono contraption, Deggers absolutely rocked it, and judging by the grins on everyone's faces, we chose well. It was a particular thrill for Simon, who attended Sputnik's legendary Royal Albert Hall concert back in '86 and idolised Degville.& co when he was a teenager. There's a video clip here www.youtube.com/watch?v=vFCxKmbqGJA (apologies for the dodgy sound, but Ms Foxxx was right next to a speaker...)

Putting on a live band was asking for trouble from a technical point of view, and there were embarrassing lulls while we hurriedly hauled our gear from the dancefloor onto the stage after SSS had done their thing, and what seemed like an eternity during which all we could do was leave our New Order disc playing over the in-house system. One particularly deranged woman kept shouting “Play some New Order!” and we don't even think it was a joke.

Of course, it was the last Spellbound before the fateful General Election, so we threw in a higher-than-usual number of anti-Tory tunes (The Beat, Style Council, The Impostor etc), and urged everyone not to vote Conservative. Fat lot of use that did, eh? Oh well, having those bastards back in charge at least gives Spellbound an authentic 80s context to kick against, we suppose...

What an amazing night, though. And belated thanks to everyone for helping Spellbound establish itself as THE alternative 80s night in Brighton.

To jog your snakebite-addled memories, you can see a selection of this month’s best pics at our Myspace (see link at the top of this bulletin), and the full gallery at our Facebook group (ditto).

WHAT HAPPENED AT SPELLBOUND ON SAT 22 MAY!
Communication let me down, that great big berk Tony Hadley so memorably sang in one of Spandau's lesser hits, and he might have been talking about the May Spellbound.

Somehow, due to a very un-modern communication breakdown, we didn't get the message that for one month only the Studio Bar was pre-booked till 10.00pm until we actually turned up at the usual time, record cases in hand, to find some sort of children's variety show going on. So, using the magic of the internet and text messaging, we set about spreading the word, and hopefully not too many of you were left standing around bewildered. Us? We sat outside the Heart & Hand with pints of cider, finishing off our make-up and painting their nails to the friendly amusement of a throng of Cardiff City supporters who had just seen their side tragically denied Premier League football in the Wembley play-off final. Well, when we say 'tragically', it's actually pretty funny.

So, we owed you an hour, and we owed it to you to cram as much good stuff into the remaining five to make up for it. Did we do it? Only you can be the judge, but we reckon we did, despite a few technicals. We were impressed that so many people actually knew the words to “Twilight Cafe” by the amusingly-surnamed Susan Fassbender (you benders are very fass indeed). OK, so we won't be playing that Jimmy The Hoover track again, but you live and learn eh...

To jog your snakebite-addled memories, you can see a selection of this month’s best pics at our Myspace (see link at the top of this bulletin), and the full gallery at our Facebook group (ditto).

***Hey kids, THE NEXT SPELLBOUND IS TONIGHT (17th July), but meanwhile, here's last month's report, bringing us bang up to date...***

WHAT HAPPENED AT SPELLBOUND ON SAT 19 JUN 2010
In which Spellbound became a TV star! For much of the night, a crew from ITV filmed the Spellbound crowd strutting their stuff in the Studio Bar for a forthcoming show called Four Parties (probably to be broadcast on one of their lesser cable channels, we dunno). It's a kind of birthday equivalent of Come Dine With Me, we think, and one of the participants, a girl called Lydia, chose to celebrate her 21st at Spellbound y'see.

Reactions to being thrust into the spotlight varied from “Aargh, get that camera out of my face!” to “Aaah, get out of my way, I want to be on camera!”, and there's no doubt that certain show-off Spellbounders LOVED the camera (and vice-versa), but we hope the rest of you didn't find it all too intrusive. We reckon it'll be a positive thing for the club to be on telly (it certainly can't do us any harm), or at least, the results should be pretty funny. Look out for 'Four Parties' in the TV schedules, and if we hear about it, we'll be sure to inform you.

The birthday visitors kept asking for some swing music, even though Spellbound is pretty explicitly an 80s night, and the best we could do was “Right Now” by The Creatures and “Goody Two Shoes” by Adam Ant, but we drew the line when this conversation happened...

Girl: “Are you going to play any Michael Jackson?”
Simon: “No, this is an alternative 80s night.”
Girl: “Well, there's a bunch of people over there who aren't very alternative...”

To make up for the disruption, we rewarded your patience at the end with a never-to-be-repeated extra. For the first and last time, by popular demand, we played another song after our normal finale of “Say Hello, Wave Goodbye”. Kate Bush seemed to hit the spot, and a stream of happy drunks staggered out onto Gardner St shouting out “I'm all yours, Babooshka, Babooshka, ya ya...”

To jog your snakebite-addled memories, you can see a selection of this month’s best pics at our Myspace (see link at the top of this bulletin), and the full gallery at our Facebook group (ditto).

NEXT SPELLBOUND: SAT 21 AUG with DJ TONY MAGGS!
Hey Spellbounders, our next night is on SATURDAY 21st AUGUST, and our guest DJ will be the one and only, the inimitable Mr TONY MAGGS, co-founder (with our own Simon Price) of London's legendary glam-trash-alternative club Stay Beautiful, and also the brilliant burlesque/performance art happening Rockabaret. As well as getting the Stay Beautiful team back together for the first time in over a year, this will be Tony's Brighton debut, and he's travelled all the way from Bangkok purely to rock the midnight hour at Spellbound, so treat him nice! Facebook event here, please RSVP: www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=106614622728175#!

THE FACTS
Venue: Komedia Studio Bar, 44-47 Gardner Street, Brighton BN1 1UN (see www.komedia.co.uk/brighton for detailed travel info)
Opening hours: 9:00pm-3:00am
Admission: £5 standard, or £4 with flyer/NUS/DSS (you can print out an eflyer here: tinyurl.com/spellboundgracejonesflyer )
When: usually on the THIRD SATURDAY OF THE MONTH (with one exception in May)

WHAT WE’RE ALL ABOUT
Spellbound is an antidote to all the depressingly identical kitschy 80s nights out there. We ditch the cheese and play the REAL good stuff from music’s greatest-ever era (our actual time span is approx 1979-1985, with Tubeway Army on Top Of The Pops as our Year Zero and the Live Aid concert as our Doomsday, but we’ll spin the odd track from outside that range if it’s good enough), to a wonderfully mixed crowd of people who remember it first time around and young ‘uns just discovering it all as new. Think: post-punk, goth, new romantic, alternative rock, new wave, electro, gender benders, early indie, 2 tone ska, mod revival, synth, blitz kids, oddballs, effeminate futurists and one-hit wonders… Look out for the Eighties visuals on DVD and slide projections for extra period authenticity. Dressing up is encouraged, but not enforced.

WHAT WE PLAY
A Flock Of Seagulls ABC Adam & The Ants Alien Sex Fiend Altered Images Associates B-52’s Bauhaus The Beat Birthday Party Blancmange Blondie Bolshoi Bow Wow Wow Buggles Kate Bush Captain Sensible The Clash Classix Nouveaux Cramps Cult Cure Danielle Dax Dead Or Alive Depeche Mode Devo Dexys Divine Thomas Dolby Duran Duran Echo & The Bunnymen Eurythmics The Fall Fields Of The Nephilim John Foxx Fun Boy Three Gene Loves Jezebel Haircut 100 Heaven 17 Human League Jam Japan Jesus And Mary Chain Grace Jones Joy Division Killing Joke Kraftwerk Magazine Marilyn New Model Army New Musik New Order Gary Numan Only Ones Orange Juice Orchestral Manoeuvres Pigbag Propaganda Psychedelic Furs Public Image Limited Ruts Scritti Politti Shriekback Sigue Sigue Sputnik Simple Minds Siouxsie & The Banshees Sisters Of Mercy Skids Smiths Soft Cell Spandau Ballet Specials Squeeze Strawberry Switchblade Stray Cats Style Council Talk Talk Talking Heads Teardrop Explodes Tenpole Tudor Theatre Of Hate Tom Tom Club Ultravox Violent Femmes Virgin Prunes Visage We’ve Got A Fuzzbox Kim Wilde Yazoo and loads more!

ARRIVE EARLY!
Spellbound is a very popular night and the venue is quite small, so it often fills up fast (usually by about 10pm). We aren’t saying you won’t get in after that: we liaise closely with Komedia security to ensure that queuing is as quick as possible and that people aren’t locked out unnecessarily when there’s room inside to accommodate them. But the best advice is still ARRIVE EARLY!

CHEAP SNAKEBITE & BLACK!
Anyone who’s an authentic first-generation 80s relic - or anyone who’s met one and heard their frontline stories from the Goth Wars - will know that the definitive drink for alternative 80s types was ‘SNAKEBITE & BLACK’ (that is, a pint glass containing half cider, half lager and a dash of blackcurrant to send it a lurid shade of purply-red). The lovely people at Komedia have agreed to sell pints of Snakebite & Black for the tempting price of just £2.50, exclusively for Spellbound!

THE UNDERPANTS SONG!
If that wasn’t already generous enough, every month you’ll have the chance to win a shot of CHERRY SOURZ for free! Listen out for The Underpants Song - in other words, “Underpass” by John Foxx - because every time the former Ultravox man shouts “underpants!” (that’s what it sounds like, anyway) we’ll throw a pair of Y-fronts into the crowd. If you catch one of the pants, you can exchange it at the bar for a shot of Cherry Sourz!

YES, WE HAVE A CLOAKROOM!
There is now a permanently-manned cloakroom at Spellbound, to put your minds at rest when you want to ditch your belongings and dance, staffed by the lovely Hollie and Mark, and priced at £1 per item.

FUTURE DATES
We’ll be back doing our alternative-80s thing on the THIRD SATURDAY OF THE MONTH throughout the rest of 2010, on SAT 18 SEP, SAT 16 OCT, SAT 20 NOV and SAT 18 DEC…

But for now…

See you on Saturday!

Love (and pride) from

Simon and Cherry xxx

WHAT HAPPENED AT SPELLBOUND ON SAT 17 JULY 2010 (AND A COUPLE OF OTHER THINGS!)
Well, boys and girls, what a busy month it's been for the Spellbound team. So busy, in fact, that we're a bit hazy on the exact details now. SPELLBOUND itself feels like an eternity ago, especially when seen through the alcoholic fog of what came next. We know there were some minor technical issues, and we know someone got banned for doing something too disgraceful to recount here... but apart from that, we think everyone had a good time!

The second instalment was the PRIDE AFTERPARTY at the Open House, hosted by Dynamite Sal and the Shameless team under the banner 'Baroque & Roll'. If we're honest, it never really took off (perhaps because the venue's a bit out-of-the-way, perhaps because people didn't know we were there in the upstairs room), and we ended up shutting down at 1.00am while the party continued in the main room. Massive thanks to everyone who did make the journey, though, and we did enjoy giving out the free lollipops and glowsticks.

And thirdly, we DJed our first-ever WEDDING at the request of the lovely Noele & Sarah, who booked us to put on a best-of-Spellbound bash at the Freebutt (with a more mixed, general playlist drawing on our other clubs, Stay Beautiful, Playground Bang-A-Round and Sound Of Silver, for the first couple of hours), complete with Underpants Song (with copies of Smash Hits, John Hughes movies and a Rubik's Cube as prizes instead of shots of booze). And, speaking of extra-curricular activities, we've got one or two very exciting external bookings coming up, about which we shall remain cryptic for now!

Despite the fact that two of the three aforementioned events involved free booze for the DJs – god, we were f#cked - we somehow stayed sufficiently compos mentis (and sufficiently anal) to scrawl down our setlists, all three of which follow beneath.

To jog your snakebite-addled memories, you can see a selection of this month’s best pics at our Myspace (see link at the top of this bulletin), and the full gallery at our Facebook group (ditto).

Oh, and we should let you know that the next Spellbound is THIS SATURDAY (21 AUG) with guest DJ Tony Maggs (Stay Beautiful/Rockabaret). And it's gonna be amazing!

Playing This Old Heart of Mine next to Motorcycle Emptiness is a very lovely idea.

Hah, I was actually mortified to be playing the Manics at a wedding disco at all (and it totally bombed with the crowd), but it was a direct request of the Happy Couple. As soon as it finished, I turned to Mrs Rhino and said "OK, from now on, no songs about alienation and the decline of capitalism."

*STAY BEAUTIFUL meets SPELLBOUND at the BIZARRE BALL in MANCHESTER!
Hey people, super-exciting news: Bizarre, "the world's #1 alternative mag", has asked our own SIMON PRICE and CHERRY FOXXX to host a room at the BIZARRE MAGAZINE BALL in MANCHESTER! It's happening at THE RITZ on Whitworth St on FRIDAY 22nd OCTOBER (8pm-2am), tickets £16.50 advance (£13.50 students/subscribers), full details here: bit.ly/68nG10 And to give some of you sexy Northerners a rare chance to find out what we're all about (without needing to trek the length of Britain), we're gonna be playing the greatest hits of BOTH our clubs with a special 'STAY BEAUTIFUL Vs SPELLBOUND' duelling-decks set. Full details below, but in short, that means dirrty Glam/Trash/Punk versus awesome Alternative 80s sounds.

*DO YOU SUFFER FROM MENTAL?*
Other attractions for your delectation on the night will include a raw and rockin' live set from horrorpunk/gothabilly heroes THE EIGHTIES MATCHBOX B-LINE DISASTER plus Sheffield synth/mathcore band ROLO TOMASSI, macabre thrills and spills from CIRCUS OF HORRORS, as well as DJ Frankie D of Club Noir/Electrogogo and, of course, plenty of cabaret/burlesque/freaks & geeks (although the best entertainment of all is bound to be the spectacularly-attired audience itself!). Now, if you're unfamiliar with either half of our momentous turntable soundclash, read on...

*WE‘RE A MESS OF EYELINER AND SPRAYPAINT...*
Currently on hiatus but coming up for its 10th anniversary, STAY BEAUTIFUL is the legendary London club night founded by Manics biographer Simon Price as a nocturnal home for The Beautiful People, delivering drunken fun to a dressed-up crowd of flamboyant freaks under the slogan “Luring disco dollies to a life of vice…” Policy: Music to show off to, i.e. glam, punk, trash, sleazy rock’n’roll and shouty grrrl music (think Bowie, Placebo, Manics, Hole, Pistols, Cramps, Suede, Iggy, Manson, Roxy, Goldfrapp, Dresden Dolls, Lady Gaga, Patrick Wolf, New York Dolls, Peaches, Mindless Self Indulgence, Guns N‘ Roses, Le Tigre…)

*FOLLOWING THE FOOTSTEPS OF A RAGDOLL DANCE, YOU ARE ENTRANCED...*
With the motto "The 80s night for people who HATE 80s nights!", Brighton club SPELLBOUND is a hugely-popular antidote to all the cheesy, kitschy, ironic 80s nights out there. Spellbound plays the REAL good stuff from music's greatest-ever era (time span approx 1979-1985, with Tubeway Army on Top Of The Pops as its Year Zero and the Live Aid concert as its Doomsday). Policy: alternative 80s, i.e. post-punk, goth, new romantic, new wave, electro-pop, gender benders, early indie, 2 tone ska etc, meaning NO Wham!, Madonna, Jacko or Jovi, but LOADS of Siouxsie, Specials, Smiths, Sisters, Soft Cell, Stray Cats, Spandau, Sputnik, Strawberry Switchblade... and that's just the eSSes!

NEXT SPELLBOUND THIS SATURDAY!
A quick reminder that it’s Spellbound THIS SATURDAY (16th OCTOBER), so get your dancing shoes on, wear something that won’t show up blackcurrant stains, and come on down to Komedia! If you haven’t done so already, please add yourself to the event here… www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=118625378180136

When: usually on the THIRD SATURDAY OF THE MONTH

And if that doesn’t appeal, then you can also buy straightforward pints of Strongbow and Fosters for the same price!

We’ll be back doing our alternative-80s thing on the THIRD SATURDAY OF THE MONTH throughout the rest of 2010, on SAT 20 NOV, SAT 18 DEC and also NEW YEAR’S EVE (details soon…)

But for now…

See you on Saturday!
