There are a couple of people on flickr who seem to specialise in really high quality macros.

The first; Lord V (example), has build himself some nifty equipment to help him out, and is clearly something of a perfectionist.

The other guy I like, Oppo Terser makes do with really quite limited equipment, but still does pretty well I think.

It's the neurons of a transgenic zebrafish larva photographed at 20x magnification. The coolest thing about it is that the technique is called a brainbow.

The photo comes from this microscopy contest.

The FT had an article about Nadav Kander who has done a series about travelling up the Yangtze

There's one professor whose grants I deal with that's always studying zebrafish. Never heard of them before.

Aesthetically though, that photo is a mess.

They're very useful for studying development and are used as models for teleosts as a whole.

I disagree.

At first, I thought it was some kind of complex nebula cloud, with lightning strikes going off on its surface. (I soon realised that even Hubble isn't that good, though!) However, the symmetry of the thing gave the game away that it was organic, but I just couldn't figure out what.

If you ask me, if you were to take any small square section of that photograph and magnify it, it could easily make a classic 23 Envelope cover design for some 4AD label band (Cocteau Twins most of all) from the mid-80s. Very pretty.

From the British Library's online archive, a photograph of the excellently named Bhutia Busty monastery near Darjeeling (taken in 1870):

Say what you will about the tenets of Buddhism, at least they had great costumes.

Because I have trouble sleeping. Here's 5 from the last year I've liked

http://www.mattstuart.com/
Astonishingly inventive and witty photos. No can fail to find something here they love. More snapshot versions of these ideas can be found in the Picture of the Week section of Daniel Eatock's site (listed below)

http://www.alexeytitarenko.com/index.html
Old fashioned b&w photos from Russia. Be sure to look at the City of Shadows set of long exposure pictures. Haunting and beautiful in equal measure.

http://www.eatock.com/project/trees/
The photos within this site are the result of a conceptual theme. This particualar link showcases photos of broken trees 'righted' by the angle the picture is taken at. There are so many fun, cute ideas in this site I'm amazed I haven't seen them ripped off more in advertising. Dig deep for rich reward.

http://www.nienkeklunder.com/portfolio/2.htm
Nienke Klunder works largely in self portraiture sequences to explore issues of transformation. Again worth clicking on the various links to different works

http://www.thebubbleproject.com/
These are more photos of street art I suppose but I find them hypnotic

http://www.chrisjordan.com/
I know I said 5 but I lied. Politics via photography here. Be sure to click into all 3 folio sections.

Fuck it here's some more

http://juliafullerton-batten.com/

Arresting, high end, high fashion pictures.

http://3191.visualblogging.com/archives/10520_1742522988/275383
This is a neat photo blog idea. One couple separated by 3191 miles each take a photo everyday without discussing the subject beforehand. Both photos are then set side by side and posted as one picture.

http://www.repubblica.it/2006/08/galle...cultura/mani/11.html

And here's an idea that has been ripped off by the ad agencies recently. Choose this link for obvious reasons but click through all of em if you like this sort of childish kitch.

www.guardian.co.uk/arts/gallery/2008/apr...08?picture=333839247
More artist than photographer I think but my, what photos. If only Yves Klein could have seen these.

I thought it was more Henry Rollins.

While two of the guys look super-hard, the one on the left looks like he is regretting the decision to attend

That photo isn't a photoshop job is it? It's pretty amazing.

No, my brother dug it up 15-20 years ago.It is American Nazi Party members attending a Nation Of Islam conference.

Yesterday Los Angeles was on NASA's astronomy picture of the day:

That's taken from Mt. Wilson Observatory. Here's the description:

unday, the sky seemed to smile over much of planet Earth. Visible the world over was an unusual superposition of our Moon and the planets Venus and Jupiter. Pictures taken at the right time show a crescent Moon that appears to be a smile when paired with the planetary conjunction of seemingly nearby Jupiter and Venus. Pictured above is the scene as it appeared from Mt. Wilson Observatory overlooking Los Angeles, California, USA after sunset on 2008 November 30. Highest in the sky and farthest in the distance is the planet Jupiter. Significantly closer and visible to Jupiter's lower left is Venus, appearing through Earth's atmospheric clouds as unusually blue. On the far right, above the horizon, is our Moon, in a waxing crescent phase. Thin clouds illuminated by the Moon appear unusually orange. Sprawling across the bottom of the image are the hills of Los Angeles, many covered by a thin haze, while LA skyscrapers are visible on the far left. The conjunction of Venus and Jupiter will continue to be visible toward the west after sunset during much of this month. Hours after the taking of this image, however, the Moon approached the distant duo, briefly eclipsed Venus, and then moved on.
