Had a bottle of this on the weekend. Quite lovely. Will be buying another.

Had another bottle of this on the weekend. Didn't like it the first time, so I thought I'd give it a last chance. It's (if I recall) a 6.6%, and I generally don't enjoy anything over a 5%. Too 'boozy' tasting/feeling.
As well, it's oak-aged, and has a distinctly 'whisky' taste, which I don't enjoy. Won't be trying another.

Spitfire's only OK, but I agree with you about the other. Nicest thing I've had out of a bottle lately is this:

I also found the whisky taste not to my liking (I think the oak aging is done in old whisky barrels which helps impart the taste). But at least I tried it!

Spitfire's very good: a lovely example of a hoppy South of England session bitter.

I must admit, I was put off it by a series of silly jingoistic ads over here, all about ze Chermans and how to beat them in the battle of the beach-towels at Spanish resorts, and that kind of bollocks. So it's actually probably been years since I've fancied one.

The best strong beer I've ever had is Duvel. I'm told great things about South German Doppelbocks as well, but I've not investigated.

Those Northern French ales are about six or seven per cent as well, aren't they? Jenlain and Ch'ti and La Choulette and them? I like them.

I hadn't heard of Harvey's before you (and I'm almost certain it must have been you, WE) mentioned it a something to look out for when Mrs F and I were going for a brief hols down Sussex way at the start of last year. Man, it's ace.

I had one of these on Monday:

Quite nice it was too. A bit fruity for this time of year, arguably, but it reminded me of Northern Light, one of my favourite beers.

I've been through all our domestic 'supermarket staples' over the years. Now I like to poke around for new things at the LCBO (our provincial liquor monopoly). The tend to rotate through a fair number of nice beers, but often it's just the one boatload and then you never see it again.

Spitfire is one of my staples. I find it to be a good, 'standard' ale. The Shepherd Neame brewery doesn't seem to produce a bad ale. Their 'Bishop's Finger' is probably my all-round favourite ale. You might want to try that next, WOM.

However, Christmas is on its way and, with it, one of my other favourite ales - Youngs Christmas Pudding:

Personally, I think this stuff is quite remarkable, as you really can taste all the different ingredients of a Christmas Pudding in there! Remarkably complex flavour.

(edit: Awful label, these days, though. A few years back, it had a classic label, but now it's got that crappy one!)

Talking of supermarket beer, the weißbier in my local Lidl isn't bad at all. Certainly more taste than Erdinger.

Gives you the shits, however, if you drink more than about two litres.

Harvey's is lovely. I had a bottle of Brakspeare Triple yesterday which was remarkably nice for a strong ale.

Fuck me, Clive. That is indeed the worst label I've ever seen on a beer. Looks like it ought to be some kind of Ribena syrup or gravy-thickener or something.

I've been drinking a bit of this over at the Tate Modern. It's pretty good.

Harvey's is lovely, drank a lot of it over the summer in the Olde White Horse. Had some of that Combined Harvest recently here in Leeds, and it was lovely too.

I'm not thrilled by Spitfire, can't really say why. Just not my style, I guess.

And yeah, the imminent arrival of Christmas Beer is being looked forawrd to.

Dink:

I used to love that McEwans Champion No.1, but I always had to drink it ice cold or it was just too sickly.

Great 'bang for your buck', though.

Thanks for the insight into your domestic life, too. I guess the McEwans could be considered a 'kitchen sink dram'.

I already had my coat on, thanks.
