Tubbs, what in the name of WG happened to Gloucs?

They bowl Derbyshire out for 44 in the first innings and still manage to lose by 54 runs?

Derbyshire won today after being bowled out for 44 first innings.

I'm currently rummaging through my Wisden to see if that's some kind of record.

Sorry, didn't see ursus's post.

In a very famous game from 1922, Hants beat Warks after being bowled out for 15 in their first innings.

In other statistical quirks, in the Warwickshire vs Kent game, the highest partnership for both sides in first innings came for the 10th wicket. In Warks second innings, it was the 9th wicket.

Lots of interesting county stuff going on, with Middlesex axing Owais Shah and bringing in Chris Rogers from Derbyshire to replace him.

Is KP the first county cricketer to be playing for another county "on loan"?

I've never heard the term in this context.

He's got 34 off 31 balls, BTW.

He's just got out.

I hadn't heard much about loans before this season, but there have definitely been others already. Middlesex loaned Worcestershire a keeper until their first choice (with Steven Davies off to Surrey) finished his university term. And I know Gloucestershire wanted to loan Robert Croft when he wasn't getting in the Glamorgan team earlier in the year. We told them to sod off.

Gloucs lost a 200 run first innings lead earlier this season, pulling a masterstroke of not enforcing the follow on. I have lost the capacity to be surprised. Except by a win at Cheltenham.

Ah now then, Etienne and others, great turnarounds. This is one of the daddies. From a ground that will be seeing some first class cricket next year while Old Trafford is being redone:

static.cricinfo.com/db/ARCHIVE/1980S/198...CC_28-30JUL1982.html

Any know why Foxy Fowler's contribution to this game is believed to be unique in the history of the game?

Actually not that big a turnaround- only a 109 difference on first innings. But when you declare on 523-4 you don't expect to lose by 10 wickets in a 3 day game.

There is a further quirk to this game, concerning the Warwickshire bowling. Can anyone spot it?

I'm guessing Fowler completed 2 centuries in 2 days (or even possibly on the same day)?

Is the Warwickshire bowling issue something to do with the 'full substitute'? - was Small called away to a test match?

Good answer from Houdi. Small was called into the test squad and Warks were allowed to use a substitute, David Brown, their manager- probably their second XI were somewhere else. Brown was the first/only(?) sub to take a wicket. Small was then released and rejoined the attack. Bizarrely, Small opened the bowling, so I assume he bowled a couple of overs on the first day, then joined the test squad in the morning and got back in the afternoon.

Fowler injured himself fielding and needed a runner in both innings. Must be unique, surely? Maybe he was hit by one of Humpage's famously hard hits- Humpage's 13 sixes was a record in an innings for an Englishman.

Can anyone name an occasion where an "Englishman" hit more sixes? Etienne might know of one.

What an incredible match.

Subs being allowed to bowl when they replace people on England duty is commonplace now (Pattinson has just replaced Sidebottom in Notts game vs Durham though he returned figures of 2.1-0-26-0 so a non-bowling sub might have been better).

Andrew Symonds holds the record of most sixes in an innings, with 16. Despite playing for Australia he was born in Birmingham.

That's the correct answer- he was England qualified at the time, playing for Gloucs in 1995.

We were quite good at finding overseas players born in England at that time. Justin Vaughan did a good job for us as well.

Symonds holds the record for a match, I think. He got 24 in that game, at Abergavenny.

Final day of the CB group stages. Somerset already qualified, are mullering a Glamorgan team resting Cosgrove, Croft, Harris. Yorkshire also qualified, playing Essex who need a win to get the best second place spot. Yorks now 145-5 in the 32nd, so looking good for Essex. If they lose then Glos can qualify by beating Northants (they are 200-3 after 34) and if they lose, Sussex will get through by beating Surrey (Surrey 201-6 after 32 with Pietersen 90*). Other important game is winner takes all clash in group 3 between Notts and Warks, with Notts struggling against Imran Tahir at 164-6.

Warks and Essex win, to join Yorkshire and Somerset in the semi-finals.

England players summary:
Strauss 7
Cook 101*
Pietersen 111
Trott 84*
Prior 19

Somerset ended up beating Glamorgan by 249 runs, which must be close to a record for a 40 over game between first class counties. Trego 147 off 89 balls, the highly promising Buttler 90* off 33. Glamorgan then subsided to 119 all out.

Have you seen Buttlers performances this season? In 20/20 and 40 over in particular, he's unbelievable for someone whose not 20 til next week. Fastest 50 in 14 years he scored yesterday. Albeit against a pub side.

I don't like the way he spells his surname.

But he's looked very good when I've seen him.
