Well worth watching.

Not only an interesting documentary but a reminder of how much great music has come out of Detroit. The soundtrack album would be killer but could have done with a bit more techno which I know very little about in its original Detroit form

Watched it on Saturday - a good story to tell, but it was overly long and repeated itself too much. I thought the music was too intrusive ("behold my soundtrack, everybody!") and the cinematography too affected. But yes, worth watching.

Here's 4 minutes for you, ursus.

Vole, I think that Temple set out to make it different from a normal documentary hence the music being so prevalent and the cinematography.

I saw it billed as a "filmscape" or somesuch and, despite the pretentiousness of that description, it is accurate and I thought it worked well.

In some ways, you could have had archive footage and footage of those incredible decaying buildings set to a soundtrack and that alone would have been a great film

I never realised it had gone that badly wrong in Detroit. With entire skyscrapers comdemned.

And I know this isn't much help, but who was the old grey-bearded guy who was interviewed in the back of a car? I'm sure I've seen him before somewhere, and it's been bugging me.

Ah! As in the John Lennon song. I knew I'd seen him in some documentary before.

Cheers BoE.

I did not know about that song, Mitch. What with that and the "God Save Oz" song, he was quite the one for the musical appeal cases, wasn't he?

If you're a Spotify user, here's a clutch of Detroit techno tracks I pulled together in five minutes just to give you some idea of what this stuff sometimes sounds like. It's one of few internationally revered scenes that's managed to stay very underground for its 25 or so years, despite having semi-regular breakout hits. Incredibly varied, and much more warm-blooded and elegant than the term 'techno' probably suggests to most people.

Everyone should buy the E-Dancer album, by the way. I got into this stuff way late, and that one was a revelation to me. I can't imagine anyone disliking it.

Looking forward to watching this too.

On a different tack, Channel 4 have got an amazing film by Temple's contemporary Chris Petit up at the moment: Content.

It's fantastic, especially for a London-dwelling former East Anglian such as myself, both being its terrains. Anyone into psychogeography (ie local history) or hauntology (ie recent history) should give it a go; although so should anyone who'd like to see a proudly intelligent and creative British film for perhaps the first time in 20 years.

Script by Ian Penman, apparently, who's on fine form here. It's so much better than Radio On, Petit's 1979 British road movie (nice try, but boring as a Happy Eater breakfast) you'd swear it was by a different director.
