Albarn's just made a play for it but there must be a worse one.

I wouldn't have thought that the sound of the Bow bells went that far though.

Another offender is Colin Newman, whose accent can get utterly distracting.

That's bollocks really. The cockney accent really is Lodon. Steptoe and son was Shepherds Bush

Bloody hell, I couldn't even think what Colin Newman sang let alone what he sounded like.

He did.

Apparently, he moved to Bromley when he was 9 in a similar fashion to Albarn moving to Colchester around the same time.

I'm thinking of 'Hurry Up Harry cam on'

Yes, a bit far removed from Hersham

Bowie went to my old school, Ravenswood. Used to be Bromley Technical College.
Peter Frampton was a former student too.

I can't think of any who fake it, and in fact, most singers I can think of are far more "common" in their speaking voices than their singing voices.

"Howld me clowse .. Wiv your luv loit shinin'" is awful, but then David Essex did speak a bit like that.

If you hear Bowie speak in interviews in the early 70s, he's fairly well spoken (not posh, but educated); he got more "Cockney", or God knows what, later.

I don't assume people do it consciously as it can depend who you're mixing with. I watched Alan Titchmarch interview Simon Callow a couple of weeks back and his accent got posher and posher, took him the rest of the programme to get back to Northern.

Cream's Mother's Lament off Disraeli Gears.

Not sure any of them were cockneys.

(And that song sounds like something from Monty Python's ... what a blot on a terrific record.)

Ian Hunter from Mott the Hoople does a sort of faux Bowie. According to wikipedia he's from Shropshire.

Brett Anderson isn't a proper Londoner, is he? His accent sounds quite authentic to my inexpert ears though.

To be born within ear shot of Bow bells doesn't refer to Bow in east London but Bow Church in the City of London's square mile. QI. Still wouldn't have reached that far though
