Off the top of my memory, he also included The Statler Brothers (with the most un-Statler Brothers song in heir catalogue) on the Pulp Fiction soundtrack.

Rob M. Thanks for the recommendations. I've already got the Prison albums plus Love/God/Murder and a couple of compilations. I was wondering where to go next.

Given the prices, it makes sense to go for a multiple disc collection. I was looking for something covering as much of his career as possible so I think I'll go for this one for the moment then pick up one of the Sun collections:

www.amazon.co.uk/Legend-Johnny-Cash/dp/B...329068521&sr=1-1

Bored of Education-I think it's the best collection available but unbelievably there's no " A Thing called Love". Other notable omissions are The Baron, Wanted Man, Without Love, I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry and his fantastic transformation of the Stones' No Expectations.

Apologies, I misread your post and put way too obvious a choice. The one that I haven't got yet but really want to is My Mother's Hymn Book but I have just seen that it was from 2004. I thought it as much earlier than that

My childhood is dominated by Johnny Cash. My father had him as his "dark side" of his music tastes - his "light side" being the rat pack.

He even bought the "Johnny and June go back packing in the Holy Land" LP or whtever it's called, which as a kid I hated. Especially the spoken stories of talking hearts urgh!
But as a kid I loved the comedy songs he used to populate his albums with, like Egg Sucking Dog ( "I'm gonna stomp your head in the ground, if you don't stop killing those chickens , you dirty old egg sucking hound" - brilliant stuff to an eight year old.)

"How high's the water momma?", and the one where he's waiting to be hung - well it sounded funny, and I group it in my mind as the twin of "Hangmman" , by Led Zep.

My dad loved his prison records of course.

It's funny how much I can remember of those songs (and bloody Marty Robbins from my brother) far more than the swinging sixties that were going on around me at the time.

That's the last disc of the Unearthed box set BoE (collecting all the unused stuff from his American years with Rick Rubin).

I'd recommend the box set if you liked the American albums, not sure what price you'll pick it up for these days though.

25 Minutes to Go. Joe Bean is another 'hanging' song, first time I heard that I just about pissed myself laughing at the ending.

When you see something like this it isn't so much a man fighting his demons as gleefully kicking the fuck out of them.
