Alex Chilton died today. I don't know any details.

Alex Chilton changed my life, and I do not know what to do. There's a hole in the world.

Heart attack at 59.

He was supposed to play at the SXSW festival on Saturday.

His influence, especially through Big Star, on pop music was immense.

Very shocked to hear this. I only started getting getting into Big Star last year. Kicking myself for not hearing them sooner and seeing them at Hyde Park. Massively influential.

This Mortal Coil's take on 'Kangaroo', which - along with their cover of 'Holocaust' - introduced a new generation of music lovers to Big Star and Alex Chilton:

I'm fairly new to Big Star but on hearing them I instantly went to buy their albums. Very sad news.

UK and Ireland actually - The Academy in Dublin on May 30th.

The least we can expect is a couple of affectionate Big Star covers.

A huge shame. Chilton and Bell were marvellous, marvellous songwriters.
Those failed to be touched by "Thirteen" are pretty souless.

Like Toro, I feel crushed by this news. I got into Big Star in the early '90s after reading about them relentlessly in the music press. I don't think I'd heard a note of their music when I bought #1 Record, but that's just how things often were back then.

Big Star are inextricably linked to my first girlfriend, and falling in love for the first time, and sitting around for endless hours listening to those beautiful songs together. I hope he found the same kind of happiness in life that I found in his music, but he was such an awkward bugger that it's hard to know what he was feeling. Today has been a very sad day.
