Go on then. The OTF Music Documentary Festival 2010. Who are the judging panel, and what films are invited to take part?

I'd like to nominate Soul Power, if I may, and also if there's room for TV series, BBC Four's recent Latin Music USA.

Festival, the documentary of the Newport Folk Festival in the '60s (I think the year Dylan was booed), is quite intriguing. It made me realise why many men once had a thing for Joan Baez, she was a beautiful, strong, engaging woman.

There's so many lovely things. There was a really nice one a few years back about Vashti Bunyan. I actually think No Distance Left to Run is really good. You'd have a retrospective section with things like The Devil & Daniel Johnston. And Screaming Masterpiece. I love Screaming Masterpiece.

Less lovely, in that there are dead people washing up on the beach and death hiding in blue pants, but this Fela Kuti doc from 1983 is fascinating.

"Hated". The GG Allin documentary is definitely not lovely, but it's completely fascinating. Then there's really classic stuff like, "Gimme Shelter", "Dig" and "Don't Look Back". There's also a great documentary about beefs in hip-hop that I downloaded from Pirate Bay, I can't remember what it's called.

Standing In The Shadows Of Motown is a great shout. And I don't know how I forgot this first time round, but That Latin Thing is one for the retrospectives programme. As a documentary it's rather disjointed to the point of lacking any real point at all, but as a celebration of one night at The Cheetah it's brilliant.

There's got to be one or two in this country, haven't there? I'm no specialist in this area (Carcass to thread!) but Sensoria has had a music/film crossover element in the three years of its existence:

2008

2009

2010 (so far)

In terms of titles, for me there's...

'Made In Sheffield'

'The Beat Is The Law'

The Quietus is putting one on this year in association with Branchage Film Festival. More details to follow. Some of the suggestions are getting big screen airings.

Featuring the Brian Jonestown Massacre, a band I would have loved in my teens, but now think that they should do national service. Interesting take on the music business.

Buena Vista Social Club, without a doubt.
I seem to remember there was one about the music festival held in Zaire before the Rumble in the Jungle fight between Foreman and Ali, one with Bill Withers and James Brown plus some more.

I've heard good things about Some kind of Monster

The Great Rock'n'Roll Swindle, Music is the Weapon (about Fela Kuti)

The African one is Soul Power and it is immensely satisfying. Would love to see the footage of the whole gig though.

I don't know how I forgot BVSC. I can't stand Ry Cooder's drawl, but it's amazing.

The producers of Soul Power plan to make as much of the concert footage available via DVD as they can once rights etc are all sorted out, according to the liner of the DVD. The Celia Cruz & Fania All Stars set is already available on DVD and it's just electric.

If the James Brown set ever sees the light of day I'm getting hold of every edition of it going. The beginning that's shown at the very end of
SP
is just so good.

Frank Sinatra the Voice Of The Century was a 95 minute Arena overview of his career which was broadcast on the BBC just a couple of days after he died. Fairly conventional compared to many of the documentaries which are no doubt going to get mentioned here, but it was a tremendously well made programme.

'Hated'

When I worked at an art college we were lucky enough to have a cross-dressing stoner on the film course for 3 years, who put on a weekly 'film club' in the college's small cinema. Courtesy of that, this is still (I think) the only music documentary I've ever seen in a cinema setting.

I simply love the end scene when a bloke is slowly approaching the live stage shimmy kind of, waving a cuban flag.
