It says here that the first train from Brighton to London is at 3.50, which is just about the right amount of time to collect coats from the Komedia and get up to the station.

Tubby...

I've been a couple of times and will certainly go again sometime, but just not yet. Will be financially recovering from Christmas for some time, I'm afraid. I'll let you know when I decide I'm next going down there, though.

I usually stay in the excellent Snooze B&B, btw and make a weekend of it.

I might make a weekend of it too. How much is it?

Any Brighton people, I've found some pleasant pictures of the place by John Piper:

Here you go, Tubby - their website.

The only slight problem is that they have a minimum 2-night policy if you include a Friday or Saturday in your stay. If you go for the smallest single ("Snooze lite") room - as I do - it's £40-£50 a night.

I expect there may be single-night places if you shop around.

The two best-known 24 hour cafes in Brighton are The Market Diner, a greasy spoon down a side street frequented by truckers, cabbies, students and monged-off-their-tits clubbers staggering out of the nearby Ocean Rooms, and the legendary Buddies down on the seafront (as seen on Channel 5's Brighton Beach Patrol), which does pizza, pasta and stuff-with-chips, and serves alcohol.

I've always been a bit scared to go in the Market Diner, but Buddies is great.

Ah, the Market Diner's great. Many's the night I've spent there, nursing a gutbuster until the trains started again, or my mate phoned to say he'd got home from his latest nightclub conquest so I could go round his and actually get some kip.

WHAT HAPPENED ON SATURDAY 16th JANUARY 2010 (FIRST SPELLBOUND OF THE NEW DECADE!)

We can admit it now: we were a bit nervous. Just two weeks into the new year, when everyone’s skint and party-fatigued, we thought we might be in for a quiet one.

Far from it. Another sell-out Spellbound, with our first-ever proper stage invasion (made possible by a larger-than-usual ‘lip’ on the stage left over from a previous show), the numbers swollen by a whole posse who’d come down specially from London.

After a couple of perhaps overly-hitsy Spellbounds in the festive season, it was great to be able to get back to a cooler playlist, and reconnect with the spirit of what Spellbound is about by spinning relative obscurities, half-forgotten diamonds that barely scraped the Top 40 (or plain didn’t) and even the odd album track.

And, if we do say so ourselves, we reckon we totally rocked it. Spellbound is always a balancing act between the competing tastes of the rival tribes of 80s music lovers, and the best nights are the ones when we somehow transcend the divides. When we saw a bunch of goths doing the Nutty Dance to “One Step Beyond“, we knew we‘d cracked it.

For some reason, tracks with “tribal” percussion went down particularly well - Adam And The Ants, Bow Wow Wow, The Creatures - to the extent that the discs kept skipping from people jumping up and down.

For the first time ever, we didn’t play our patron saints Strawberry Switchblade (we were sort of planning to but we just ran out of time), but our new poster girl Grace Jones got plenty of exposure with “Private Life”, “Pull Up To The Bumper” and her cameo on Arcadia’s “Election Day”.

We now have FIVE hours of Spellbound TV, which means hardly any repeats, and means that when you aren’t dancing, you can feast your eyes not only on carefully-chosen pop vids but also Max Headroom, the opening credits to Brookside, the Quattro soft drink advert, the Gregory’s Girl trailer, the Protect And Survive public information film, clips from Grange Hill, news reports about The Miner’s Strike, Matt Bianco being told they’re wankers on Saturday Superstore, and so on. Hope you enjoyed it. It took us ages - hours, days, weeks of slaving over a hot Windows MovieMaker - so you’d bloody better!

A quick announcement: the ad-hoc, at-your-own-risk cloakroom rail has been a mixed blessing, and we’ve already heard one unfortunate tale of someone going home with the wrong coat, leaving another customer shivering. We’re happy to announce that from now on there’ll be a properly manned cloakroom every month (£1 an item) so you can leave your bags and coats without worry.

To jog your snakebite-addled memories, you can see a selection of this month’s best pics - beautifully taken on proper film (just like it was the 80s) by our new Official Spellbound Photographer, Karin Nilsson, to whom massive gratitude is due - at our Myspace (see link at the top of this bulletin), and the full gallery at our Facebook group (ditto).

Oh, and we should remind you that the next Spellbound is on SATURDAY 20th FEBRUARY… Now, here's that playlist:

9.00pm-3.00am on the THIRD SATURDAY OF THE MONTH (with one exception in May)

NEXT SPELLBOUND THIS SATURDAY - DJ ‘RANDOM‘ JON POOLE!
A quick reminder that it’s Spellbound THIS SATURDAY, so get your dancing shoes on, wear something that won’t show up blackcurrant stains, and come on down to Komedia! This month, our guest DJ is Brighton bass-playing legend ’RANDOM’ JON POOLE (below) of THE CARDIACS/THE WILDHEARTS/THE LOTUS EATERS etc! Jon really knows and loves his alternative 80s stuff, so we’re really looking forward to his set.

ARRIVE EARLY, BUT IN CASE YOU DON’T…
We know that many of you had the unfortunate experience of being turned away from our first few Spellbounds because we were full. Since then we've had a meeting with the Komedia management about this and sorted things out so they run a lot more smoothly. That said, the best advice is still ARRIVE EARLY!

CHEAP SNAKEBITE & BLACK!
Anyone who’s an authentic first-generation 80s relic - or anyone who’s met one and heard their frontline stories from the Goth Wars - will know that the definitive drink for alternative 80s types was ‘SNAKEBITE & BLACK’ (that is, a pint glass containing half cider, half lager and a dash of blackcurrant to send it a lurid shade of purply-red). The lovely people at Komedia have agreed to sell pints of Snakebite & Black for the tempting price of just £2.50, exclusively for Spellbound! And if that doesn’t appeal, then you can also buy straightforward pints of Strongbow and Fosters for the same price!

THE UNDERPANTS SONG!
If that wasn’t already generous enough, every month you’ll have the chance to win a shot of Cherry Sourz for free! Listen out for The Underpants Song - in other words, “Underpass” by John Foxx - because every time the former Ultravox man shouts “underpants!” (that’s what it sounds like, anyway) we’ll throw a pair of Y-fronts into the crowd. If you catch one of the pants, you can exchange it at the bar for a shot of Cherry Sourz!

CLOAKROOM - HURRAH!
We’re pleased to announce that there will be a permanently-manned cloakroom at Spellbound from now on, to put your minds at rest (the previous set-up, with an unmanned rail or no rail at all, was far from ideal), £1 an item.

WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT
Why are we doing this? Well, first of all, for FUN, obviously. But also because we strongly believe that the greatest music ever made came out of Britain between Tubeway Army's "Are 'Friends' Electric?" appearing on Top Of The Pops in June 1979 and the Live Aid concerts in July 1985. (We'll allow a couple of years' leeway either side for anything particularly brilliant, but that was the start and end of the Golden Age, we reckon).

And because we strongly believe that this era is poorly-served by cheesy retro club nights with a smirking, ironic 'guilty pleasures' mentality, perpetuating the revolting lie that the 80s was all about Yuppies, Rambo movies, shoulder pads, mullets and all that glossy mainstream Reaganite/Thatcherite nonsense. SPELLBOUND is the alternative antidote to all that. We know that isn't how it was at all if you were actually there, we know that the 80s - particularly the first half - was actually the most fascinating, vibrant, diverse, flamboyant, exuberant, colourful and inventive time in pop history, and the C.R.E. (Campaign for Real Eighties) starts here.

SPELLBOUND is a joyous celebration of the GOOD stuff, not the zillionth regurgitation of the same old overplayed rubbish. We’re all about the music you genuinely love, not music you pretend to be into for a cheap laugh. Which means you'll hear NO Jacko, NO Jovi, NO Wham!, NO Bros, NO Madonna, NO Astley...

...but LOADS of New Wave, Blitz Kids, Goth, New Romantic, Post-Punk, 2 Tone Ska, Synthpop, Indie, Electro, Alternative Rock, New Pop, Mod Revival, Rockabilly Revival, Gender Benders, Oddballs, One-Hit Wonders etc. You want names? Siouxsie, Specials, Smiths, Sisters, Soft Cell, Stray Cats, Scritti, Spandau, Squeeze, Sputnik, Style Council, Strawberry Switchblade... and that's just the eSSes (see 'Music' on our Myspace for a full playlist). And we'll be playing it on the original scratchy old vinyl whenever possible, cos it sounds better that way.

SPELLBOUND aims for nothing less than to restore the reputation of an entire era... and to give you a bloody good night out in the process, without being forced to rub shoulders with wacky students in wigs, or lairy seafront/West St wankers in oversized school uniforms. Look forward to seeing you there!

From the cradle bars comes a beckoning voice... it sends you spinning... you have no choice...

FUTURE DATES
We’ll be back doing our alternative-80s thing on the THIRD SATURDAY OF THE MONTH (with one exception) throughout 2010, on SAT 20 FEB, SAT 20 MAR, SAT 17 APR, SAT 22 MAY (fourth Saturday due to Great Escape festival), SAT 20 JUN and so on…

But for now…

See you on Saturday!

Love (and pride) from

Simon and Cherry xxx

WHAT HAPPENED AT SPELLBOUND ON SAT 20 FEB 2010
After nearly a year of doing Spellbound, there are still itches left to scratch, still loads of alt-80s songs we keep meaning to get around to playing. A few got played this month, and in some cases won’t get played again (“Miserable Lie” left even Smiths fans looking bemused, and “That Was Then But This Is Now“ felt awfully long once the famous “apple crumble” line had been and gone), but on the other hand, “Ne Ne Na Na Na Na Nu Nu” by Bad Manners went down ridiculously well and might have earned another spin some day.

When you invite a guest DJ, you do so partly because you know they’ll bring something fresh to the club and look at it from a slightly different perspective, and Random Jon Poole (Cardiacs, Wildhearts, Lotus Eaters and the rest) certainly did that, venturing off-piste with pre-famous Ultravox and Teardrop Explodes and non-singles by Joy Division and Siouxsie in a playlist which looked bracing and slightly forbidding on paper but which actually went down a storm.

Another great night all round, in fact, with capacity hit yet again, and we’re still attracting brand new people, not just the same crowd over and over.

The introduction of a properly manned cloakroom was a massive success, and will continue every month (£1 an item) so you can leave your bags and coats without worry.

To jog your snakebite-addled memories, you can see a selection of this month’s best pics at our Myspace (see link at the top of this bulletin), and the full gallery at our Facebook group (ditto).

WHAT HAPPENED AT SPELLBOUND ON SAT 20 MAR 2010
“This isn’t 80s music…“ complained the Brazilian lady in the pink tutu, as a Depeche Mode single from 1982 played in the background.

Simon politely assured her that (with the arguable exception of one Ants track) we’d been playing nothing but 80s music since the doors opened, but she was having none of it. Shortly afterwards, she and her party of 17 left, hopefully in the direction of a tacky, generic 80s Night For People Who LOVE 80s Nights.

She wasn’t alone in failing to ‘get’ Spellbound. Another woman asked us to stop playing such “dark” music and to play something more “cheerful”. Another nervously asked for Bruce Springsteen. I mean, it’s not as if we don’t make it pretty bloody clear what we’re about in all the advertising, is it?

Thankfully, the vast majority of yet another capacity crowd did ‘get’ it, which is why what was at first a bit of a disjointed Spellbound (partly due to a couple of technical hitches, partly due to Simon playing what he admits was one of his more self-indulgent sets between 11 o’clock and a quarter to midnight) eventually clicked like it always does, and turned into another brilliant night.

After all this time, we’re still managing to throw ‘new’ songs into the mix, and it’s always a thrill when one of them really hits the spot. This time, probably the best (and most unexpected) example was “Klacto Vee Sedstein” by Blue Rondo A La Turk, an obscure piece of edgy cocktail funk which didn’t even make the Top 40. When we saw people actually singing along, we couldn’t believe it. Another real-world non-hit that turned out to be a Spellbound hit was “What’s A Girl To Do” by Cristina, which had people coming up and asking for the title. That’s gonna get some repeat plays, no question.

Giving away the Visage albums wasn’t as easy as we expected. Our first attempt drew a complete blank, shame on you (Q: “Which member of Visage was also in Magazine and Nick Cave’s Bad Seeds?” A: “Barry Adamson”). We had to try again with a simpler question: “Steve Strange appeared in which David Bowie video?”

It was rather exciting to be able to announce our FIRST BIRTHDAY PARTY on SATURDAY 17th APRIL, and to reveal the identity of our special live guests: 80s cyperpunk legends SIGUE SIGUE SPUTNIK, now down to a synth duo but still led by the fishnet-faced Martin Degville, who will be making a short, sharp PA performing songs from the Flaunt It! Era in new electro versions. It’s gonna be so amazing…

To jog your snakebite-addled memories, you can see a selection of this month’s best pics, mostly taken by our official photographer the super-talented Karin Nilsson, at our Myspace (see link at the top of this bulletin), and the full gallery at our Facebook group (ditto).

This time, probably the best (and most unexpected) example was “Klacto Vee Sedstein” by Blue Rondo A La Turk, an obscure piece of edgy cocktail funk which didn’t even make the Top 40. When we saw people actually singing along, we couldn’t believe it.
It was quite a big club hit at the time and I'd imagine that those people attending your club, who were old enough to be clubbing when it came out, would be familiar it.

Blue Rondo were tipped for great things, but it was novelty band Modern Romance and their inane songs like Everybody Salsa and Ay Ay Ay Ay Moosey, who rode the latin/salsa bandwagon to success. But, if you were at the right places (gawd! I sound like MSD) you’d hear a lot of Klacto Vee Sedstein in the early 80s.

You fucking wish.

But (of course), I do know the BRalT boys and still have a vinyl copy of Klacto etc etc. but thought it was a novelty record, really.

You really shouldn't take yourself quite so seriously.

Groan. I don't take myself at all seriously except about serious things. You just don't get my humour.

So don't keep taking my name in vain based on your stereotyped idea of what I'm like, you don't know me. Its tiresome.

Anyway, we're messing up the Spellbound thread.

Fair enough. Apologies for failing to spot the humour.
