I am off to Haiti for a month at the end of the week. Rather amazingly my flights there and back will involve 24hr stopovers in New York. A place I have never been.

I'll fly into Newark, and check into a hotel near JFK by late afternoon before a morning flight to Port au Prince. 4 weeks later it is the whole show in reverse - but I imagine I will just need to sleep a lot.

So any tips on how to spend my afternoon and evening?

This is incredibly difficult without having a much better sense of what kinds of things you are interested in. This is our most recent thread, which may give you some ideas.

Feel free to ask specific questions. The one thing that you absolutely have to do is get away from JFK as much as possible.

Should you be in the mood for football, Red Bull New York inagurate their brand new stadium in north Jersey on 3/20, vs Santos. I assume tickets are available since they're crap.

Great next question. How do I get from Newark to JFK by public transport with two suitcases?

Not as easy or inexpensive as it should be, but these guys run shuttle vans.

Well, you can always get the Airtrain, then the Jamaica-Penn train, then the NJ Transit to Newark.

The real thing to avoid is a cab to Newark from New York. It is out-of-state and the pricing can be a really rather unpleasant sting.

He's going the other way, and I'm not sure that would be significantly cheaper than the shuttle (it would definitely take significantly longer and be a pain with two suitcases).

If I did the latter, I could probably leave my luggage at the station, and head towards JFK later. This would save me doing a trip back into town. Would this work?

I am not certain they do left luggage in Penn Station. If you could, someone might do them a favor and blow the place up.

My cunning plan revealed...

If only there was a world wide information like web where I could look these things up.

I'll see what I can find.

I think that you may need a valid Amtrak ticket to use the limited "luggage storage" facilities at Penn Station.

There are definitely no public lockers, and the entire process will add time (if it works at all).
