There seems to be a recent addition of obnoxious uses of sound in the ads on the WSC site (including this forum). This is a drag because I often listen to music as I am reading this forum so I don't want to hit mute. I seem to get hit with this every time I come to the forum. There does not seem to be any way to shut off the sound on the ads.

I get that WSC needs ads to cover costs for the site and hopefully profit as well, but they don't need to be jerks about it. Anyone have any tips beyond trying to chase down an admin to ask them to just stick with the visual ads?

Firefox and Adblock Plus seem to work for me.

These are highly fucking annoying. I get that the mute button works now, but it would be nice if it stayed muted forever.

Are other people getting this endless loop of "Interactive Advertisements" for household cleaning products (mostly produced by Lysol) and similar crap, or is it just something targetted at US-based IP addresses?

Yep, I'm getting these as well, and I also have a U.S. based IP. It's driving me insane.

Sorry - as I said in a previous thread we've been experiencing some quality control issues recently (we're certainly not deliberately being "jerks"). Have they stopped now?

Sadly not. Lysol - never touch a germy love-pump again.

I don't know about sound, because I only see the ads at work, where I don't have my speakers plugged into my computer. I just got one of the Mucinex ads.

They're not exactly targeted ads either, which is supposed to be the point of all this Web 2.0 stuff were at. We're not bloody housewives or teenage girls with pimple problems, we're the cutting-edge, think-out-of-the-box, ahead-of-the-curve crowd. If they're gonna do us with ads they should be for flashy 3G phones, iPads, Operating systems and Toyota Priuses. Bah!

Which is a point that admin 5 and his/her colleagues should make in their "discussions" with the provider.

I doubt that I would ever have seriously considered buying Lysol's "Hands Free Soap Dispenser", but I sure as hell wouldn't want one now.

There was a spin-off from this thread (started by Stumpy Pepys, IIRC) in which he bemoaned the use of ad-blockers; rightly stating that those using them (which includes me) are cutting off potential revenue to the site owners.

I'd just like to stick my oar in and say that the only reason I've started to take this course of action (on this site, at least) is because of the intrusive sound. I've no particular objection to the ads themselves - although there have been several recently which are a little near the knuckle for a work PC...

I'm suddenly noticing spots on my carpet that I hadn't seen before thanks to that Resolve ad and the girl in the Clearasil ad is fanciable.

Is she as fanciable as a funny t-shirt model? I hated the Snorg girl, but the redhead from Busted Tees...ahem.

I don't know if she's in that league, but I'd probably have more of a chance with Clearasil girl.

I have a US-based IP as well. Every time I move to a new page, the sound ads pop up (Lysol, Clerasil (sp?), etc.).I have changed the settings for the ads so nothing is stored on my computer (whatever that means) but it hasn't helped. I still have to hit mute every time I move to a new page. I really don't want to deal with an ad-blocker, and appreciate that the ads help pay for this site, provide money for WSC, etc. But the sound stuff is just ridiculous. Maybe y'all (admin folks) can go back to the company who is dealing with your ads and tell them that these types of ads aren't cool for your audience.

EDIT: I'm curious what is actually "interactive" about these adds that tell us we get to interact. Ok. I get to hit a mute button for every page but beyond that, nothing. I have added Firefox's Adblocker Plus but it's not doing the trick. Any tips for blocking on a Mac?

Oh my god, that drives me crazy! What the hell is the point of a hands free soap dispenser for your home? It's not like you touch it after you wash your hands, people. The only thing I can see it being good for is kids wasting soap playing with it.

PS I don't like having to keep muting those ads either. Just my two cents.
