The abuse started when she was 8, and went on for 10 years. The abuse started when she was younger than my daughter is now.

And went on for 10 years.

And at the end of it, he was shifted to another diocese.

What fresh horror will it take to convince certain posters on this forum that people's expressions of anger and disgust aren't opportunistic point-scoring, but, well, expressions of anger and disgust?

And they paid her to keep quiet, that's heartbreaking, imagine how that must feel.

It's completely stupid of me, but I just keep thinking of my daughter and crying.

Obviously the abuse in itself is by far the most appalling, immoral and distressing thing about the story, but it was the line "He told the girl that God would punish her if she spoke out about her ordeal" that really escalated my anger and made me think "what an evil, disgusting old cunt".

I was just about to post that quote myself. I am reminded of Christopher Hitchens verdict on the death of Jerry Falwell: "It's a pity there isn't a Hell for him to go to."

Talking of Hitchens, I was just reading his take on this.

With any luck he'll have lived for a while in the fear of it.

Quite, now multiply that emotion by ten if you come from a time and place where these parasites were given free reign to abuse and terrorise children with impunity, and as Brady seems to be suggesting , a time before abuse was considered bad.

This institution's festering corpse needs to rot in hell along with its papa.

Though apparently not. In the one-page "letter of apology" the Church made him write, he said that "recent years have been difficult for both of us", and that he was sorry if "gestures of affection" on his part had been misinterpreted. This for abuse that seems to have been too bad to print.

He did, in that same letter, though, complain that the stipend the Church was giving him was quite stingy.

In other words, he didn't happen to have £18,000 going spare, otherwise... well, y'know.

After she did speak out, her family approached the diocese in Derry, and the victim claims the cleric was moved to another parish in the diocese despite meetings with Hegarty in 1994 during which he told her family he would deal with the problem.

Why were families complicit with this bullshit, though? If a lawyer abuses your child you don't think "right then, I'll talk to the partner in the law firm". If a junior doctor abuses your child you don't arrange a meeting with the consultant. Why did people in nearly all instances go along with this bullshit and presume the Church would deal with it rather than immediately reporting the crimes to the police?

Admittedly there could be a case in Derry specifically for Catholic families to have a strong desire not to deal with the RUC but there wouldn't have been similar issues in the South.

Yep, the thread-title just reeks of sincere concern for children.

That's before we consider the same poster's attitude towards the travails of the Adams family...

Did he say they weren't as altogether ooky as advertised?

I don't think you have a right to question the sincerity of a parent imagining it were his own daughter, though.

Oh, also, I don't know how you get from the thread title to insincere concern for children.
