I would have put Merton Lane ahead of New College Lane in Oxford

I was thinking about mentioning Merton Street, but I might have been accused of favouritism. Plus a chunk of it was a building site when I lived there.

Can we have King's Parade

Yes, because I used to live on it, and therefore it is important and lovely. And everyone else seems to have lived on one of the nominees.

edit: evidently I take favouritism to a new level.

York has loads of these quaint little streets. The problem is that you can't really appreciate them because they're packed with tourists.

You can walk down Stonegate

Which leads on to Petergate (home of the best chippy in the country bar none)

Carry on through Kings Square

And then you’re on to the Shambles

I unapologetically say give me chocolate-box-y every time. I just like stuff that is easy on the eye and mind and I find chocolate-box-y views fulfil those criteria for me.

I seem to remember Beverley had a few pretty streets, but I'm buggered if I can remember their names right now. Same with Hull's 'old quarter' over near Ye Old Black Boy pub.

Conversely, places which you'd think have lots of pretty streets, but which I'm struggling to think of any *really* good ones include the two towns I'm most familiar with - Farnham and Guildford - plus Whitby, which I found a little disappointing, I have to say. Bath is lovely, but I have to say I found the Royal Crescent to be a little bit sterile-feeling when I stumbled upon it.

It's obvious the google streetview cameras have never been off the mainland: how else can you explain the quite ludicrous omission of Tobermory Main Street?

Back on the mainland, another street I always liked the look of was The Parade in Leamington Spa:

And Park Circus in Glasgow does not too badly on the architecture front as well:

A side to Peckham (SE15) you don't expect to see. Choumert Square, which is just round the corner from where I live.

For Oxford, I think The High takes it. Lovely sweep up a gentle hill, with colleges all over the place, some nice steeples and the odd tree. Now it's access and buses only, it's brilliant.

The porch for the university church is one of my favourite bits of architecture anywhere. More mad English Baroque.

That bit of Peckham is completely new to me, Meregreen, and looks wonderful.

Spangly Princess isn't around much these days, but I think I recall this is a favourite of her's. Vicars Close, Wells, right by the cathedral.

I'm surprised Edinburgh doesn't get a bit more mileage on here, but then I also don't have any photos of it myself, having not been in eleven years (eleven years!).

Bristol's magnificently-named Christmas Steps deserve a mention. It's not entirely clear from this photo, but I was pointing the camera around 30 degrees downwards when I took this:

Most of The Parade is ruined by the typical bog-standard shop selection (For instance, Accessorize is visible in that picture - the pound shops and other such delights are further down) and boy-racers thrashing the shit out of their Clios between the speed bumps.

The river, with the Pump Rooms and Jephson Gardens opposite each other further down are where I go to remind myself that I live in a nice little town.

Castle Street, Farnham, c.20 years ago:

-

It has to be about 20-25 years ago, judging by the cars ...and I can't remember us ever having small buses that were green! Strangely, though, the buildings are almost completely unchanged, so the view is still relevant. The one thing that has changed is that the road is clogged with traffic seemingly 18 hours a day, now.

If that's the street I think it is in Tubby's picture, we went there over Christmas, while it was covered in snow. Very pretty and slippy. It's the oldest in tact street in Britain, is it not?

Fuck you Flickr, why won't you let take the source url from the full size image anymore?

Look at it here www.flickr.com/photos/7662750@N05/4421674319/

It's just around the corner from Peckham Rye station. The area between Rye Lane and Camberwell is a really pleasant oasis amid the general hustle and bustle of SE15 and SE5.
