RIP José Torres, who died today at 71 (Alzheimer's).

Teammate of Eusébio's in the great Benfica teams of the 60s and Portugal in '66, he also took Portugal to Mexico as Seleccionador in '86 (where they burst into flames, though). I don't know, but I feel he might have been a bit neglected in his dying years (although Benfica will make a big show of what a legend he was).

Sad news indeed, and I guess this will finally be an occasion when a minute's applause might be more appropriate than silence (But I always prefer silence).

What a horrible way to go as well. I never want to develop Alzheimer's.

RIP.

RIP

A good player, one of the game's best headers of a ball and a great partner for Eusebio at forward for both Benfica and Portugal.

Interestingly I read where Torres, who won many titles of course with Benfica, never won the old European Champions Cup with the club but played on 3 beaten finalists in the 1960s.

A Dutch friend of mine sent me a link of Torres scoring 2 goals in the snow at Ajax, where Benfica won 1-3. Lovely first goal and great celebration for the second:

He scored the late winner in the 3rd place play-off game in 1966, too.

RIP.

Nice one, Tacuara. Lucky the bloody snowball didn't slip through his fingers when he had it above his head ...

Scorers used to do those little leaps of joy in those days, didn't they? It all seems so quaint now.
