Hello all, I am off to Hamburg next weekend and was hoping to catch the HSV-Nuremberg match, but I'm clueless about buying football tickets in Germany.

Is it too late to try to buy them online and bring them over, or does anyone have any advice on buying them in the city in the run-up to the match.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

That should not be sold out. Just go to the stadium at least one hour before kick-off and get a ticket at the counter

The on-line ticket service indicates that there are still over 4000 tickets available.

The on-line thing is in German, which may not work for you, but this English language page has all the info you need (including prices, a map, phone numbers if you want to book that way, and the addresses of places to buy tickets downtown).

On a similar subject, I'm going over to Hamburg for a weekend in March to catch a St Pauli match. Is there any other local-ish lower league teams in the area that may be worth watching? (I don't mind a bit of a train journey)

trebeis is yer man on that subject. He's seen them all and played against some of them.

Ignoring reserve teams (which aren't that interesting), you have Lubeck and Kiel in the Regionaliga Nord and an entire Oberliga for each of Hamburg, Bremen and Schleswig Holstein.

Lubeck is a more interesting city to visit, as G. Man would tell you at some length.

The kicker Matchkalendar is your indispensable resource here (together with the DB timetable.

The link to the Matchkalendar is for the first Saturday in March, but you can get to any other date by clicking the calendar at the top right of the page.

And Lübeck is closer to Hamburg (about 65km). The only thing speaking fo watching Kiel is that Holstein will play for promotion, whereas VfB Lübeck probably won't.

its easy to spend hours charging around looking for a game to get to. and that can be fun as well.
but you could go to altona93 or viktoria hamburg who have a kind of earthy and unpretentious feel about them and are a good antidote to the commercial world of bundesliga. just don't expect too many silky skills

also, to buy tickets at HSV you could just phone up the service centre (mon-sat 8.00-18.00) on 00491805 478478 and book the tickets to be collected on matchday. they will speak english ok to you

this is a little out of date but might help with online bookings

As shadsworth and ursus have mentioned, the Oberliga Hamburg is a very good idea. The standard is better you might think (I watched Moritz Volz just last week and he was one of the worst players on the pitch) and it only costs 5 euros to get in.

I’ve developed a soft spot for SV Curslack-Neuengamme, who are currently third. They don’t only play decent football (the centre-forward, former HSV non-star Matthias Reincke, is worth the admission money alone), their ground's also in a charming outpost in south-east Hamburg that’s full of windy lanes and dykes and cows and countryside and stuff.

Oh, and if you have a gippy tummy, the pub next to Curslack-Neuengamme's ground has a Speibecken, the only one I’ve ever seen in 20 years of living here. You don't get that at HSV.

I find it counterintuitive that the oberliga is below the regionaliga.
