There's a joke about the decade he burst onto the scene in there somewhere...

If you can't remember whether you once saw George Best play, that probably means you did.

Only better.

Heh! I know...I know.

His first "retirement" was after a match at Loftus Road too, which I would have expected me to be at. But...???

Haha, nice.

Are we allowed to re-jig the teams we've posted in this thread? I only ask as I suspect mine might change in the next five days; I've got a ticket for Argentina vs Spain on Tuesday...

Just wanted to brag really.

This is friggin' impossible.

Are we basing the selection on their form in the matches we saw, or overall performance? Because Pele and Platini won't make it if the latter (though Beckenbauer and Cruyff will, and Best might).

That is an excellent question but I am guessing most here are basing their teams on the players career performance not the single game so that is how I will select my team. But the single best performance by a player that I witnessed at a stadium was Kasey Keller's standout play in goal against Brazil in 1998 in that year's Gold Cup semifinal. His play was so good that Romario even stopped and applauded a few of his point blank saves that night.

OK then here is my first XI of the best players I have seen play in person:

GK: Iker Casillas
RB: Javier Zanetti
CB: Franco Baresi
CB: Aldair
LB: Roberto Carlos
MF: Mauro Silva
MF: Fernando Redondo
MF: Teofilo Cubillas
MF: Zinedine Zidane
FW: Romario
FW: Ronaldo

Second XI:

GK: Walter Zenga
RB: Jorginho
CB: Andres Escobar
CB: Jurgen Kohler
LB: Paolo Maldini
MF: Dunga
MF: Lothar Matthaus
MF: Carlos Valderrama
MF: Gheorghe Hagi
FW: Gabriel Batistuta
FW: Jurgen Klinsmann

I've been going since 1984 so....

1) Peter Shilton
2) Maicon
3) Ashley Cole
4) Lothar Matthäus
5) Danny Blind
6) Lucio
7) Eric Cantona
8) Kaka
9) Henrik Larsson
10) Paul Gascoigne
11) Thierry Henry

In a 4-1-3-2 sort of thing, with Matthäus playing in front of the defence.

Subs: Bryan Gunn, Steve Bruce, Darren Eadie, Ian Crook, Craig Bellamy, Chris Sutton and Dennis Bergkamp.
