I believe they assign teams to groups based on their previous finish. When they used to have four groups of five, this is how they were determined.

The composition of the groups definitely changes significantly from season to season, so that may well be correct.

My sense is that most Mexican League fans ignore the groups other than for purposes of playoff qualification. The league is so heavily influenced by television that they are used to this kind of manipulation.

Not a fan of the group system, but I do like the Liguilla system. Since it creates a bit of parity and lets big teams from dominating.

I still don't really have a team I support in Mexico. Leaning between Toluca or Pachuca because I love their stadiums or UNAM because I love their support.

I think all the teams in Mexico City are located in the Southern half and their stadiums are really close to each other. Crossing the city can be downright brutal sometimes.

Although if Toros Neza or Atlante were still playing in Neza instead of Cancun (ugh). That would simplify it. My family lives around that part of Mexico city.

Toluca, hombre, Toluca haha

You're right about the Pumas' support.
It's a great atmosphere in CU.
A little different in that the hardcore supporters aren't behind the goals like in most stadiums, but on the long sides instead.
When they get going there's a call and response going from one side to the other.
Sounds great - even to a visiting fan.

Right time for kick off.....

Chivas say goodbye to Estadio Jalisco with a 0-0 draw with Puebla. They're moving to their new stadium--Estadio Omnilife, Estadio Chivas, or Estadio Templo Mayor, depending on what you read--this week with a friendly against Manchester United. The exterior design is kind of cool--there are grass slopes going up the sides, with a white roof on top of the seats, so it looks like a volcano topped by a cloud from the outside:

That's pretty cool looking. I wonder if being surrounded by grassy berms like that will help keep the temperature cooler inside on hot nights.

Golazo!
Really don't mind losing to a goal like that.

Only saw the first half and it was end to end but scrappy and disjointed.

I said upthread Toluca rarely lose in CU, but apparently they haven't won there since 2005.

Oh, well at leat America lost so not an entirely disasterous weekend!

This Clausura looks like same old same old for Club America de Futbol. Their entire forward line is back to the usual big money ways. Since Cabanyas' injury they had actually given some playing time to some of their youngsters who did pretty ok on the whole especially Antonio Lopez. Now they are back to their old ways, playing Vuoso (naturalized Mexican), Vicente Sanchez, Beasejour, and Rolfi Montenegro. If someone totalled the amount of money they've spent on overpriced foreign talent... oh wait, Televisa does not care.

As to my beloved Atlas, not much to report as we lost to Morelia, had a chance to equalize from the penalty spot with 4 minutes to go but Moreno skied it over the bar. Did not get a chance to watch the full game but as with most Torneos Cortos, you never know until the liguilla.

Cruz Azul's Emanuel Villa scored a hat trick against San Francisco in Panama in a CONCACAF Champions League match last night to win 3-2, and next they play Atlante, who have given them trouble before.

These are actually quite good.

I presume the hoof in the bucket indicates that Atlante had trouble with Santos last week? The owl scalp is also a nice touch.

Yes, and the number of stars surrounding the dazed little owl and the smarting hoof of the colt is the number of goals scored against the respective teams.

Somebody with better Spanish can correct me, but I think the hare is saying "Hurry up, I need to make a stop in Panama."

Basically yes.

More idiomically: "Step on it, bud. And I need to make a stop in Panama."

I've never seen a more hilarious opening ceremony for a new stadium. Chivas gave their fans a massive workout. First they had to hold up placards, then they all had to put on a white t-shirt, then they had to be quiet for a moment of silence before they had to cheer again, and all of that was only in the 5 minutes that I saw before kickoff.

Reading about Estadio Chivas on Wiki, I couldn't believe it's a fieldturf field. Let's hope this is true as well:

Artificial turf, approved by FIFA, is composed of a mixture of fibers, sílica sand and rubber sand, which is a product of recycled sports shoes. Artificial turf was selected due to its low maintenance costs. Additionally, it is resistant to ultraviolet radiation and bacterial attacks.

Fieldturf is such a brilliant invention and gift to the game...until your whole team ends up with a team staph infection. Now each time I step on one of those fields I get the heebie-jeebies. I hope they can build an anti-bacterial field, lest they get a zamboni machine that can pump out hand sanitizer.

I presume appropriately enough, Javier Chicharito Hernandez scores the first goal in the new stadium for Chivas (off a Jan Kolleresque chestback to a golaço volley,) before he plays the 2nd half for Unmentionable United (™OTF Gold.)

Man Utd ties it a minute later. 1-1.
