One thing kind of struck me the other day. Man utd seem vaguely obsessed with the idea of signing brothers. We've seen the Two nevilles playing for england with great distinction, and there are the Da silva twins.

But Man utd also have three other sets of brothers. There's Wes and reece brown, Jonny and Corry Evans, and will and michael Keane who are also twins. Indeed in the last couple of years they've had the glamourous sounding adam and richard eckersley. Fergie clearly likes to keep it a family affair.

Are there that many other examples of footballing brothers? I can think of jack and bobby charlton, the de boers, The baresis, the de fillipini twins, the koemans, the muhrens, and the baggio brothers who played for italy in usa 94.

There's an extensive Wiki on this.

Dino Baggio is not related to Roberto Baggio. Roberto's brother Eddy never made it to Serie A.

One of the most prominent recent brother acts that you've missed are the Laudrups, who also are in the middle of what is likely to be one of the first families to produce three generations of full internationals (Michael's sons have both represented Denmark at U-19 level). The Laudrups won't be able to match the Hernandezes of Mexico, who will have three generations of World Cup players once Chicharito steps on the field in South Africa.

George Hamilton will never live that down, will he?

Wallace and Van Der Kerkhoff spring to mind. Max and Christian Vieri deserve a mention, having played for different national sides.

I'm sure this has been done many times though.

the wallaces and the steins were big news in the 80's. Michael and andy dawson are brothers aren't they?

Efe, Steve, Akpo and Sam are the brothers Sodje who have all played at a decent standard in England over the last 10 years or so.

Love that article, ursus, especially the inclusion of the Allen family tree. Pity poor Ron Allen - his son, both his brothers, his 2 nephews and his grand-nephew all played professional football. Ron did not.

The Dutch are in a league of their own when it comes to fielding brothers in prominent sides. The Van der Kerkhoff, Koeman, Witschge & de Boer brothers all played in major tounaments.

I saw the game where the 3 Wallace brothers all played in the same game for the first time - Southampton vs Sheffield Wednesday, also notable because a friend of mine got seperated from us at the end of the game and ended up being herded onto a Sheffield Wednesday supporters coach.

That wiki page is good, but not exhaustive - the Hateleys, for example, are on their third generation of pro footballer.

The Ivory Coast is a hotbed of siblings: there's the Kalous (Bonaventure and Salomon), the Konés (Bakari, Aruna and the less illustrious Karamoko) and the Tourés (Kolo and Yaya). Most notable about this is that all except Karamoko Koné are contemporary internationals.

The Bolis (Basile and Roger) would have added to that total if they had chosen to play for the land of their birth.

As it happened, there was talk of Roger getting a French cap when he was knocking them in for fun at Lens, but that never happened.

Derek and Barry Ferguson both played for Rangers and Scotland although not at the same time.
Famously in the 80s Tom and Colin MacAdam, Tom played for Celtic and Colin for Rangers.
We've currently got a few sets of brothers with us at youth level plus Gordon Duries son.

Alex Ferguson used his brother a lot when he was at Aberdeen for scouting players and opposition teams even though I don't think he ever played professionally.

Yannick Boli, their nephew, has opted to represent Les Éléphants.

Gonzalo Higuaín's brother Federico is currently at Godoy Cruz, who are vying for the Argentine title with his own former side Independiente (and their dad, of course, was an Argentine international).

Two of Lionel Messi's cousins, Maxi and Emanuel Biancucchi (who are brothers) are also professional players. Maxi recently moved from Flamengo to Cruz Azul, whilst Emanuel plays for 1860 Munich. You've also got Gabriel and Diego Milito, who might yet both get to the World Cup if the former can prove his fitness with what's left of the season, and no fewer than four Zárate siblings: Ariel; Sergio; Rolando and Mauro.

Sergio Zanetti - Javier's older brother - would be a contender for most overshadowed sibling in football, but for Hugo Maradona.

I think Dumbarton have to win this one.

The MacAdams, already mentioned by AMMS, played in the same Dumbarton team in the early 70s before ending up at either half of the Old Firm.

Not long after that, Murdo McLeod and his brother Ally played in the same side.

But they really hit their stride in the mid-80s, when I started going to see them, when they had Joe Coyle, Tommy Coyle with some kid called Owen Coyle up front.

Three brothers in the one team. I'd like to claim my prize please.

"Sergio Zanetti - Javier's older brother - would be a contender for most overshadowed sibling in football, but for Hugo Maradona."

That's a whole thread in itself. I always had a very soft spot for Gary Robson. Probably because he did the decent thing and stayed with the Albion through the wilderness years. Unlike his traitorous brother, Bryan, who opted for fame and glory.

Ah, but who's laughing now, Bryan? Wikipedia tells me your brother Gary has an assistant manager's job at Whitehill FC. You'd kill for that, wouldn't you? And your other brother, Justin, is the manager of Whitehill. Talk about rubbing it in!

Erwin and Helmut Kremers of Schalke — twins — would both have been in the German World Cup squad in 1974, had Erwin not been sent off in a Bundesliga game towards the end of the season.

Hamburg had a few brothers playing for them in the early '60s. There were the Dörfel brothers, and the Seeler clan.

On the other hand, the Altintop brothers went their separate ways after leaving Wattenscheid. One went to Schalke, the other ended up in a cesspit of Satan's spunk.

Rangers have had Derek and Barry Ferguson. Actually Rangers must have had a dozen Fergusons on their books in my time following them with that pair being the only related ones.
